Killed My Pc

right, reporting in from my old mans computer on the fact that ive killed mine!

been having a few various niggles with it over the last month or so and was advised by a couple of folks to first use the system restore rollback, which i did and to no avail.

and if that didnt work then run my system repair disc that came with the machine....

so i did that, and now the PC wont boot past the initial 'black screen' system test!

giving me a message of NTLDR is compressed and to hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart... which just sends me round in an endless loop??

i can still run the the repair disc which has three options..

1) repair

2) backup all docs and reinstall XP

3) format disc and reinstall XP

i have run option 1 and 2 to no avail!

any help much appreciated!

Mate, i got this boot disk thats not windows XP and that worked superbly! I booted it up, it runs a desktop thingie with tools etc... And i ran ChkDsk.exe

Seemed to do the job.....

Ill try and find it for you, but you have to be able to burn it to CD

stick the harddrive in another PC, transfer all your !Removed! and stuff, then reinstall XP

you may need to change the jumper in the drive, best to boot to the bios, plug in the drive, then tell the bios to auto detect, the finally save(usually F10)

ta vmail

in the process of either using my dads PC to back up or bunging a second hard disc in my own machine as i need the extra space as it is!!!

load OS onto that to start from scratch and set orignal drive as a slave to carry all my docs across and then wipe clean the old drive....

just fired up my trusty rusty old laptop to keep me connected for now!

DVD+r/-r are 17p each now, after you have sorted the PC, mirror it to some DVD's (just like system restore)

try booting into safe mode , see if you can access them that way , cant see why access was blocked in the first place though.

your <I thought I could get past the swearing filter - what a sad muppet I am eh?>ed,unless

if you have about 2GB, re-install XP (different directory)

then take ownership of the files, there is another quicker way but its not legal

right click on directory, properties, security, advance, owner

select an owner, tick replace on subcontainer and objects then click ok

I think... Not used XP for a long time

go into the security settings, add yourself and give yourself full control, you may see other users like S946874-45645-456456-46, just ignore them, they are from the old PC

are you logged in as any administrator?

if the filename are green then it will be bit harder to get the files

its becuase you had a NTFS partion and the old docs folder would have been in your name....

So when you logged in on XP you unlocked your "my documents" but becuase you are login on the OTHER XP it sees you as a different person...
