Old Five Speed Transmission!

I have a 1978 SR-5 Pickup Truck that I've had for a very long time. The Transmission on this rig is kind of tempermental in that it EATS carrior bearings all the time. Also the 5th gear sit out there on a spline shaft and that shaft gets trashed after a while causing my 5th gear to just go away!

I'm wondering if Toyota made a different tranny that would fit a 1978 SR-5 Long Bed Pickup! I'm thinking that the newer trannies are better then the older ones. Also, I'm having difficulties finding parts for the thing.

Any ideas
