Bad Mpg (corolla 2c Diesel)

Hi All,

Recently bought an 1992 corolla diesel with 40K mileage which has high fuel consumption. I changed the fuel filter, oil filter, air filter and oil. The corolla has an auto gearbox.

The MPG is about 28. Any ideas why the MPG is so low or is this typical. Also, I would be grateful if someone can forward me timing data information.

Thanks in advance.

I have one of these - 1992 2 litre diesel corolla estate, japanese import. I get 40mpg average (48 mpg at a steady 50 mph). Auto gearboxes are a bit more thirsty but I wouldn't expect 28mpg. It may be worth having the timing tweaked but it needs someone who knows what they're doing. The timing info is in the workshop manual but I can't find one anywhere. Haynes have never done one but they do exist as www.shiffeuropean.com say they used to supply them (but are now sold out). If you find one I'd love to see it as I want to replace the head gasket.
