My Carina failed it's MOT on the emission test the mechanic think's it is the sensor rather than the catalyst,

i was wondering if anyone else has had this problem any advice appriciated,

also i am having problems changing a side light bulb as you have to take the Battery out to get to it and i don't have a manual.

thanks

Changing bulbs can be a real pain on modern cars. On my wifes passat you need to remove the cold air feed pipe that goes to the airbox. Just keep taking stuff off till you can get access.

Check out http://www.justlambda.co.uk for a replacement lambda/o2 sensor. You'll probably find its less than half the price of a genuine Toyota one. Its normally located on the downpipe, just look for wires going into the exhaust.

Hi,

Is the Lambda sensor a easy DIY Fix?

Thanks

2 12mm nuts right at the front of the engine and a wee clip.easy. Just dont do it when the engine is hot ! :ffs: :ffs:

its likely that your lambda O2 sensor has packed up.

petrol engines try to operate at stoichiometric conditions, this means that just the right amount of fuel is injected to react with all the oxygen. Your sensor is reading oxygen or lack of it in the exhaust pipe.

The lambda sensor is not hard to change, but its usually stuck in with some kind of extremely high temp gluey kind of thing.

The more tricky part is getting to it. on the starlet its just past the downpipe but before the cat. theres plenty of room to do it on that. you may or may not have more troulbe on your carina.

hope this helps

have a nice day
