Hi. New owner. Bought 96 MR2 T-Bar on Sunday and it's leaking on Tuesday! Drips coming in from back / top passenger door window. Any advice before I book it in to Hartwell's Toyota? Greatly appreciated!

Welcome to TOC charlie-w.

Do you mean the T-Bar top, or the rear side window?

IF the former, then yes, quite a few people have had this problem with T-Bars. Common solutions include applying silcon to the seals to refurbish them, and fitting non-concentric bushes into the holes where the locking pins engage. There are some other more drastic solutions including replacement of the seals themselves which I understand costs several hundred pounds. I'd be wary of letting the dealer fit new seals if problem could have been solved by either of the much less expensive solutions.

If you do a search you'll find more info on the above solutions.

Regards, Tony

Hi Tony

Thanks for your mail.

The latter, the leak is coming through the passenger side window! Would you still advise to use silicon? If so, do you know what kind and who would sell it?

I agree, I would much rather try to resolve the problem prior to taking to a dealer, but I'm concerned that I will not do a professional job! Bit of a girl!

Really appreciate your advice, thanks.

The rear passenger window? That's a new one on me.

On mine there's a gap at the front of that window and obviously a water channel running down the back of the window - if I pour water in the gap at the front it exits at the back just in front of the rear air vent that's in the corner of that window.

Has your car had one of these rear quarter's replaced? Perhaps it's not been done properly, or perhaps something's blocking the channel so the water has to go into the car? If the glass doesn't have Toyota etched into it then it's probably a sign that it has been replaced. Of course it might have been replaced with original glass so even if it is etched it could still have been replaced.

You may need to get specialist help on it. Sounds like the window needs removing to find out what's wrong and that's probably not a job you want to do yourself.

No harm in asking Toyota for a quote if no-one here knows an easy solution.

Tony
