Burning Oil!

I have a 55 Registration D4D 2.2 Avensis. It seems to be burning a lot of oil! I had a 10,000 mile service completed and within 3.5k miles the oil lamp was showing. I do not frive the car hard and use Shell Diesil. I have on average managesd 49MPG. Any ideas?

Is this normal. Someone from the dealer said it would probably burn 1 Litre every 1200 miles. Considering my old V Reg 1.8 GS lasted to 145000 miles without burning any oil between services I am disappointed!

Apart from that it is a great car!
