I think it has something to do with the limit switches needing to be reset.

I think I had a similar problem, and my dealer rectified ot free of charge.

This happened when I had my Avensis aswell. I wouldn't have bothered getting it sorted but it was under warranty. They reset it first but it still kept sticking, further investigation found the cables were very stiff with age and the whole sunroof was replaced. The dealer charged Toyota warranty around £480 all together.

Personally i'd just use the A/C, and it's cheaper than burning extra fuel from ruining the aerodynamics by having windows and sunroofs open.

This had happened to mine, my local dealer did not have a clue on the phone and the 40mile round trip put me off.

I can not remember how I closed it but it involved playing with the open/close switch with the ignition on and off, but at what stage I can not recall but it may be worth playing with it. I only use tilt now to save this happening again.

  • 2 weeks later...

I had exactly the same thing on my 98 Avensis last summer. Eventually I took it to National Windscreens to have it fixed - it had something jammed in it (no idea what - I'd fiddled with it for days myself and seen nothing) but it only cost me about £50.

I worked out what the problem was by reading a older post. I found that the sunroof only gets stuck when u open the door whilst its being closed with no key in the ignition aswell. After a few days of fiddling with it i found that all u have to do is the reverse in how it happened. so put the key in and open the sunroof fully. then press the automatic button by keeping hold of it and pull the key out of the ignition and open the drivers door and it shut perfectly.

Hope it helps.
