When I brake the side lights come on as well as the brake lights, does anybody have an idea where to start looking for a fault?

The bulb holder for the brakes will probably be the culprit. This fitting holds the dual brake/tail light bulb. Ive had one rust up on me in the past cause similar problems. May just need cleaning out. The current in the brake circuit is bridging to the lighting cabling.

Do your front side lights come on with the brake lights or just your tail lights? Do the brake lights come on when you turn on your side lights?

Almost certainly some sort of corrosion or bad earthing in the light cluster. It's easily cured though with a good clean.
