To Be Or Not To Be....

Hello all,

I had my TS serviced on tuesday, the 2 years 20,000 mile one in fact. Firstly, i asked them not to touch the washer fluid because i never use it, therefore its still full. Come to the invoice and... screenwash @ 2.95! Your having a laugh!

In fact while i'm talking about the invoice, how does the total price of £247.51 grab you? 170 of that is labour! Now have i been taken for a mug? :crybaby:

And can i just ask this.....

They've reported on the Visual Safety thing that my "front discs rusty 1/4 distance across inner face of disc. Advise new discs AND pads as new discs will be lipped." My car is only 2 for crying out loud! And what does lipped mean? They want another £246.05 for that!

Don't know about the rest but if you specifically asked them not to do something (i.e. top up the screen wash fluid) & they did it you have every right to demand they take it off the bill, refuse point blank to pay for it

I normally say to to do the screenwash or the injector cleaner. Bottle of redex and a fill of BP/Shell Ultimate instead...

You've been reamed mate. My 40k service (The Big One) wasn't that much...

Where did you go for it mate?

I took mine to Westfield Motors in Rayleigh - a Lexus & Toyota specialist for the 20k on the Yaris Blue back in December, cost £97 or thereabouts. Done on the same day & they said about a slight oil leak from the sump or main bearing. When Dad called both Toyota dealers for me they quoted £265 for the 20k service which I just didnt have spare - I had £150 but not an extra hundred!

Took it to Toyota Rayleigh yesterday who removed, refitted & resealed the side cover & sump on the engine under warranty. There has been a squeak from the front o/s wheel which I believed to be the brake binding as my previous T3 had the same squeak & that was what Romford said caused it. Anyway Rayleigh said that they couldnt find "any obvious signs or excess or abnormal wear of the discs. There is a slight lip on the discs and this may be causing the noise. Recommend either deglazing the discs and pads or skimming the discs and replacing the pads. (would not be warranty as discs slightly lipped."

They did the free visual safety report and no problems apart marking the brakes bit in the amber box and putting "slight lip on front discs" report only as present.

I got one of the guys on the service desk to explain to me what lipping is - but I'd have no chance in explaining it to you at the mo as I can't remember what he said now!

Lipping is just the bit on the outer edge of the disc that isn't under a brake pad and as a result doesn't get worn down like the bit under the pad.

The lip may rub on the side of the pad and give you some noise, but this can be solved by lifting off a wheel and tapping the lip off bit by bit with a hammer. Its not hard, but a bit time consuming and you have to remember to do the rear side of the disc too.

Of course, your dealer may insist/tell you that the disc should be placed in a lathe and the surface turned down to an even finish. Both will achieve the same end result, but one is a damn sight cheaper!

If you change the pads on the car then the "lip rubbing on the side" is a major cause of a squeak btw.

Basically, "lipping" sounds alarming but is just the disc wearing down like wot its supposed to do.

I took it to lookers toyota in chelmsford, where i bought the car. I was shocked because the 1st was only about £115. I was expecting this one to be about 160!

They eventually said the discs would be done under warrenty but i'd have to pay for the pads. How can they say that though? If the discs are faulty through no fault of my own then and a replacement means new pads too then surely they have to fit the bill? Do i have a point?

I'm actually shocked as to how little they know about stuff their cars! They kept passing the buck about whether the discs will be under warrenty and no one new how to say the word auris. Thats just pants.

Yeah all the Lookers group seem to be the same :ffs:

Forgot to say before that Rayleigh said the car is perfectly safe and ok, but to alleviate the problem that's what they recommend! If it doesnt need to be done for the safety aspect then it can stay that way IMO!
