Air Con 'grind Noise'

I know that air con makes a loud click when you turn it on and every so often whilst it is running (due to the thermostat?) but now it's started to make a loud grinding noise when I turn it on. It only lasts for a few seconds and is generally only when I switch the air con on after the car has been left for a few hours. If I turn the aircon off after the grinding noise and then back on again, it just makes the usual click sound when it comes on. The air con seems to be working ok despite the noise. Does anyone else get the grinding noise or know what it is?

The only 'click' I have noticed, is when the fan cuts in and the revs drop for a fraction of a second!

Sounds a bit worrying_ have you ever had the system re-gassed?

You can buy the gas from Halfords for about £20 or so, with a pressure gauge so you know if it has enough gas.

Probably not as good as proper gassing up by dealer, but good for intermediate useage.

The gas also acts as a lubricant so perhaps that is the problem. Is it getting very cold, or just cool?

I have to turn mine off now and then as it makes my hands too cold!

Give it a go or get some advice from Mr. T .

Also, in order to keep air-con working reliably, you should use it more often, most drivers dont test it in the winter as they dont want to get cold, but it is essential that you do, now and then, just to maintain it. Same as sun roof mechanics, open and shut them on occasion, and grease the runners.

Hi,

We've got an Aygo, and it made and done exactly the same as your Yaris, we took it back under warranty and being 'in the trade' I described it the best I could and basically told them that I thought the noise on the air con was the air compressor clutch assy, they listened and inspected the car and a new compressor and clutch(air con clutch) was fitted, cured the problem, been ok since.

Hope this helps (Get it done under the warranty if the car is still under warranty as it will cost loads) :(

Paul

i would definately take it back to the dealer to get it looked at professionally! ... air con is actually more complicated than what people think ... i was only talking to a specialist last week and he told me that a lot of people make the mistake in 'topping up' the gas when in actual fact that isnt the problem atall ... he went into lengthy detail about how it all works (was replacing air con in an '02 BMW at the time), i was asking him about the air con on our voyager! really interesting bloke to talk to and obviously knows his stuff about air con ... i would send you his details but he's in bristol, plus if you got someone to look at your car and its still under warranty it might (almost definately) actually make the warranty void on that particular part!
