Auris Mmt - Reverse Gear Doesn't Always Engage..

I'm driving my Auris 1.4 D4D MMT for three months.

Recently I'm experiencing a (intermittent) problem when selecting reverse gear. Normally when I select reverse a beep sounds and reverse is correctly selected and [R] is displayed on the dash - no problems. However sometimes, when I select reverse, it beeps once and then another alarm (lower tone) chimes twice. During this time the dash continues to display [N] and the accelerator does not respond. Soon after the dash dispays [R] and everything is ok.

This issue does not seem to be connected to any particular driving conditions. It has happened after a cold start and also when parking after a long drive.

Has anyone else experienced this?

make sure the car has come to a complete stop before selecting reverse. if the ecu still thinks the car is moving it wont allow reverse to be selected

I think it is a quite common problem, wouldn't worry too much about it unless it happens all the time. For me it is maybe every tenth time or so and then I just let up the brake a little and press it firmly again and then it works. I've told myself to try to always come to a complete stop, press the brake firmly and change gear slowly and see if it still happens, but I always seem to forget...

I thought that too, the manual mentions stopping before selecting reverse. However, it mostly happens to me when I'm reversing from a parking space - just after starting the engine.. It's good to hear that it's not a serious problem, I was concerned that it might happen while in 1st gear in traffic..
