pop into toyota at durham or sunderland , better still get a replacement cv joint for half the price at a local motor factor.

Sorry - we misled you with Kingo. Its how we address the king of parts!

GT4 has given you some sound advice. We can only speculate over the web but the Toyota DTC tester will confirm which station is faulty and probably test the sensor/exciter ring relationship. It might save you some money and work (there are easier jobs than changing a CV joint) or if you are confident that exciter is cream crackered you can give it a go.

As they say on blind date - its up to you!

Sorry to sound like a complete mug but what does DTC stand for

You'll get used to the terminology soon mate (you will even begin to understand bothy with time).

DTC = Diagnostic Trouble Codes. When Mr T plugs his tester in it will transfer information by way of alpha numeric codes that he can convert back to determin the nature of the fault. You can buy them fairly cheaply but although they will read all the "P" Powertrain, "C" Chassis and "B" Body codes they do not have the software to read ABS codes.

Mr T or a good ABS specialists can.

I'm just thinking about the fault codes (DTCs= Diagnostic Trouble Code) that will be stored. I'm sure you've realised, but your probably going to have one (or some) DTCs stored related to when you did the tyre rotation test (it did put the warning light on after all), so don't let that fool you (or somebody else) into a mis-diagnosis.

If Bothy's info lets you clear out the DTCs, I'm wondering whether perhaps you should, read them first, then clear them out, then go for a drive, then see if more or any have been stored afterwards. Does that make sense or am I talking *****? That would also apply if you decide to skip the flash codes and go for the Toyota Tester.

Of course, if my understanding of Anchorman's theory is correct then the ECU may not think the system has a fault, so after clearing, you may not get any new faults (I assume the tyre test was the first time the light came on?).

I agree that getting info out of the ECU first makes more sense before diving in with spanners etc.

Bothy - top man, got his head screwed on there. I'd forgotten about flash codes. I only ever seem to remember coming across them in Jap specified or sourced ECUs. Maybe other have them, but I don't seem to remember any. Good idea in my opinion. I must have done too much reading them out over CAN or ISO - that's my problem :rolleyes: :D .

your coming through loud and clear and yes that was the 1st time abs light has ever came on.give me some time to digest info(having a few drinks)over weekend and i will keep you all informed of my progress

I'm not sure that you can retrieve flash codes from later models but its always worth trying.

As shcm you should always write codes down before deleting them. This might also help diagnose trends over long term (years). Just jot them down and leave them in your handbook together with the dates.

Just had a look and I believe you can.

For both 4.2 and 4.3 connect pin TC (no. 13) to pin CG (no. 4) of DLC3 (diag connector) with service tool 09843-18040. The service tool is a piece of wire (now that kind of service tool I like!) I think.

For the 4.3 with multifunction display instrument pack (which is all EU 4.3 RAVs I believe), it's even supposed to display the DTC as well as flashing the lamp. Thanks Mr. T! Highly sensible IMHO.

I remember a "build to print" Jap engine management ECU we did years ago which even had a LED inside to do the flash codes. Uncommon for something we'd design ourselves for a European vehicle manufacturer.

Just managed 10 minutes on car to try and download flash codes but don't seem able to locate ecu or program reader nr kick plate on passenger side. will the '98 rav have this facility or is location elsewhere?

There is some electronics down there, but nothing with a cover on that can be removed, only a black relay.

Any advice would be appreciated

Both can you send me those 3 pages regarding this area?

Hi Taff

I answer loads of questions every day and tend to forget who has which car. Please please please update your profile to save me trawling each time.

With regard to the diagnostic plug, on the older models I have needed to check, the plug was in the fuse box under the bonnet.

Just have a butchers and hopefully bothy will have a hunt too.

We could do with a photo if some nice person can assist.

ok people latest update

Found datalink connector(it,s in engine bay nr front left has the word"diagnostic" on top of cap)and checked the flash codes.

Codes that came up were

31,.....problem in right front wheel sensor circuit

32,....problem in left front wheel sensor circuit

33,....problem in right rear etc

34,....problem in left rear etc

Also 41....Battery voltage too low or high.

Next i deleted these from system and went for spin,came back and no further faults on system.

Also did special wss test to test wheel speed sensor, did what it said on instructions but still no faults have arisen.

In a way i wish something had come up to give me some direction but no, so back to drawing board :(

Did i upload links to fault codes from the ABS - I did but on another topic - dunno if they would be any use - see auld age!!

Even i'm not sure anymore, but i do have them thanks.

Looks like the abs is not faulty but just kicking in when it shouldn't or something like that.

looks like i wil have to admit defeat and take to garage and take a financial kick in the nuts :crybaby:

Bad luck Taff. I was half expecting it not to show more faults, but like you, was hoping it would.

Problem is the ECU is never going to diagnose every eventuality. This is possibly the problem with some (not all) garages these days. ECU says no (in Little Britain style) so they believe it. You can't beat a bit of good diagnostic nouse coupled with the ECU diag output.

Anyway, remember, it could still be the ABS (as GT BOOSTERS links says). There's some good advice in there about detecting faulty sensors, but if you haven't got the kit (DVM or scope), it's not that easy.

Oh well, in the end it will probably be the ash tray or something :rolleyes: and we'll all look like complete a**es. Having said that it's never easy to diagnose something remotely.

If you need more "help" or want to chew over ideas just shout. Somebody's bound to answer.

Hi All

Just thought i would update you all about eventual solving of my braking problem.

Not been on for a while but that was just xmas and i was even seriously out of love with the old rav. :angry:

...But not no more :D

took the car to a local Halfords branch, but the service side is now a different entity from the bikes and camping etc. and after they stripped it down they found not one but two cracked sensor rings on cv drive units.After fitting two new ones in about 5 hours it is now running as good as ever. B)

the funny thing is i took it to another garage the week before and it passed it's mot with same braking fault.

Little quiz then, how much with labour vat etc was final cost?(in sterling please for those over the borders)
