Temperature Gauge/coolant Temperature Sending Unit

I have a 3.4 L 1996 Toyota 4Runner 4x4. have had some issues with the temperature gauge being a bit erratic but now it's completely dead. I replaced the coolant temperature sending unit, warmed up the engine and got nothing. Then I replaced the entire dash cluster/temperature gauge, still no movement. I have checked the fuses inside and in the engine compartment. I ran a test that said I should ground out the wires from the sending unit and that should get a response unless the circuit was open. I take it the circuit is open somewhere but WHERE? I get power in the wires to/from the sending unit but from what I believe are the wires going into the adapter in the dash cluster, I get nothing from the inside. Is there a command module, chip, etc...... that I am missing bc I cannot find anything else about where else to look.
