How Noisy?

Hello, I think mine is noisy....dunno, don't have anything to compare it to, my last rav was petrol. Maybe I'm just paranoid after my initial probs with this but it seems quite "tappy" to me. Drives very well and I have no other complaints......except one of the rear seats has been refitted incorrectly so will not come out now.....whatever!

Its always a difficult one this. I can tell you that the D4D certainly generates more noise than the equivalent petrol but you would expect that. I guess the easiest way is to try to drive another. I can also tell you that if you buy high grade diesle (BP Ultimate or Shell V Power or similar) that it will take away some of the knock. I came from a petrol Corolla and thought mine was noisey at first but I've got used to it now.

I'm not sure if that helps???

Thanks, I think I might change the oil as on checking that is black, pretty thin and slightly over filled. It was supposed to have had a full service but I doubt it. I think from reading the owners manual that I use 5w30 fully synth, is that correct? I might use some flush aswell just to make sure that the rails are clear, are there any recommendations?

TIA

Not really.

I use 5W30 semi synthetic and I know that Kingo (the parts specialist who supplies genuine spares) also recommends it.

The oil change is reviewed in post No3 in here;

I don't bother with flushing oil but I guess if you don't know the history it will do no harm.

Regards

hi

be sure you use oil for diesel engines.

just for guidance -- the oil for petrol has less alcality number than for diesel. the alcality is required to neitralise an sulphur acid originated on the liners walls due to moisture and sulphur in the diesel that are normaly mixed.

it is very important thing !!!

be saved + cheers/Igor

Weve just gone from a petrol 4.1 to a 4.2 D4D and my misus says its like driving a tank in comparison ! However I took it on a long run and notcied a significant difference once it had warmed up (she only does the school run!!)

That and the temporary deafness brought on by all the clattering and banging!:lol::lol:

Only joking......you're right, they do like being fully warmed up!

I've got the 2.2 D4D engine...and i think its very noisy when its cold....reminds me of a tranny van !!!

I had a golf gt tdi before this and it was much much quieter.

But i plan to buy a new stereo to drown it out !

Never drove the RAV4 Diesel, but test drove an X-Trail diesel and that was horrible with awful engine noise. The Petrol VVT-i sounds Niceeeeeee B) - especially with the TTE Exhaust

Well I smiled as I wrote the question realising that you can't really describe noise but....I did change the oil/filter on Tues night and I think it is sweet now, just like a tranny!! Thanks.

I really enjoy the sound of my diesel. It's the sound of saving fuel :D

I used to have the avensis 1.6 petrol, and it was quiet. The problem was that it was too quiet, and had no power. Now with my 2.0 D4D Rav, it is loud, and powerful. I just installed a powerful stereo to reduce engine noise :P
