Gearbox Fault Output Shaft.

Hi all, this is my first post. I have a 2000 1.8 vvt Avensis, a couple of weeks ago the manual gearbox developed a whine. I'm now on a weeks leave from work and am about to get it looked at. Is this likely to be a bearing ( and seal) on the output shaft. Also if this is the case can it be repaired with the gearbox inline. I just need to know as I'd rather get a local garage to do it.
