Importing

About 5 years ago I bought a yaris for the girlfriend from an importing site - virgin? or someone and saved about 20%. I also imported myself a yaris verso as we used to go camping etc and saved about 25%. This I did through a toyota dealer in denmark. Very easy, drove it home without plates from harwich and registered it in cardiff, so the paperwork is all uk.

Both now sold and I have my lovely rav.

I wondered if anyone here had imported a rav, or are the exchange rates etc not so good anymore.

I did try back then to get a car from ireland, but when requesting a price without tax, and if I remember an irish new vehicle tax, it didnt add up. When I questioned this I was told - you save a few pounds and we make a few pounds.....

Dont blame him looking back, but not quite right for a dealer maybe.....

anyway

anyone done this?

Can't see any sense in this at the moment.

Exchange rate is well against you.

Likeley to see our Continental bretheren buying LHD in the UK if the rate stays as it is.

Under EU law this is possible (I think).

I think the traffic's more the other way, certainly between the Republic and the North of Ireland. With the Euro now worth around £0.95 (astonishing - I was getting 72 pence a year ago for a euro!) and much cheaper prices in the UK and NI generally, lots of NI dealers are advertising a "turnkey" car exchange scheme. You take you Irish reg car, part exchange it in the North for a UK (higher) spec model, and the dealer does all the re-registration of your new car into the RoI, including paying the dreaded VRT (Vehicle Registration Tax). Even with the VRT mark-up (28%) it still makes sense (if you've got any money, and if you can get past Newry with its several mile tailbacks into Sainsbury!!)
