Concern for over 150 jobs at Toyota dealership

24/06/2009 - 15:32:55

There are fears for over 150 jobs at one of the Midwest’s biggest Toyota dealers.

Tom Hogan motors, which has premises in Ballybrit in Galway and in Ennis, Shannon and Clonmel has gone into liquidation.

It's understood that staff were sent home when they turned up for work this morning.

Just heard about it on the radio - tough day for the workers, the country is really gone to the dogs. I suppose more dealers will be joining them. Very tough situation - what do reckon the chances of Brian Cowen (irish taoiseach - same as prime minister in the UK) and his men deciding to reduce VRT to try and simulate the trade again. I know people will say that they will lose money doing it - but if it helps the motor trade get going again - they will make up some of the money lost in increased car sales - and more of it because of reduced dole payments (less people on doll) and increased taxes from employees. However that would be too sensible for our great men - whove yet to come with a plan to create jobs or help businesses. The problem is no one is buying cars due to the economic downtown - its a catch 22 situation - a dealer needs people to buy cars in order to stay in business - but people can't buy cars if they don't have money for them

Tough day for the workers as ive said - but what happens if your a customer thats bought of them - say a new Toyota and you need the car serviced and warranty work done - what contingency plan have Toyota Ireland got to deal with this situation - they may not have caused the problem (but the customers still need to be looked after - otherwise no one in Tom Horgans catchment areas will buy Toyota again - other manufacturers dealers will move in to take the business)

Sincerest sympathys to the workers - tough day and very little jobs out there
