Avensis 2l Td Black Smoke

I have a problem withy my Avensis emmiting too much black smoke from exgaust even when accelerating slightly

- 2L TD engine,- Y 2000 150K miles

- engine does not burn any oil (I service it every 8-10K km and never need to top-up)

- car starts perfectly from cold engine every time

- car starts after 5-7 starter rotations when warm engine, on sedom occassions (2-3 times a week)

- i do not feel that engine is loosing power when driving

- it has been a bit "smokey" when I got it (90K) but it is getting worse now

- i do mainly motorway miles (160km ) daily commute

- air filter has been changed

My mechanic refered me to local diesel engineer and he advised that it's eather pump or injectors. He will connect electronic pump to the engine and if the

smoke is still there - than it must be injectors , they have to be replaced (or cleaned)

For the whole job he asks 250 EUR

Shall I go with this or any other checks can be made? How about glow plugs?

hello mate

have all injectors repair/changed and make some records in your car log book for future reference of the injectors lifetime -- it is in fact useful.

Regarding to glow plugs -- they are responsible for cold starting only. In case you have no issues with cold starting then do not screw them out.

To grubasky,

Are you sure your man you purchased car of did not tip a couple of bottles of anti-smoke into tank before selling car. Your injectors are old style mechanical injectors which can be rebuilt & tested to fire of at correct time with correct spray pattern ( you could at best just have a dodgy injector) curing your problem. Also if pump is changed & all problems are solved for €250, that sounds good to me. Make sure you ask the diesel specialist to carry out compression test, just incase you have a bit of bore wear.

Regards, Beagh.

If bore wear was present,

It would indicate comsumtion of oil.

I would look at the EGR valve, and your turbo.

To grubasky,

Enjoy your trip home. Offer stills sounds good, make sure you don't get ripped-off though. I would say you know how it works here now, make sure your man has not just a pile of old parts at the back of the barn that he will just throw at the car.

Regards, Beagh.

  • 4 weeks later...

OK holidays are over, I went to diesel enineers who fixed the car 100 % and I'm happy with it

first they connected the computer - no faults

the pump is electronic already in my engine so swap test was no go

then I mentioned to them that the car is from NI (North Ireland)

bingo! the guy became very sure that the issue is injectors. they use much agricultural diesel there and put an acid in it to take the color off

this damages the nossles in injectors making spray cloud wider then it should be

So, they changed all injectors and gave me the car back. I paid 200 euro only

Wow! I felt like jumping on DB9 :) car got much extra power ( especially third gear) and black smoke gone (well will go away fully after 100-150 miles)

now I'm testing fuel consumption

so end of story and thanks fo support

Hi

OK that is great you have felt the power again.

We're always here to support, in case of head ache.

How's Ukraine? You'd share your impressions.

Besides

you have quoted:

"they use much agricultural diesel there and put an acid in it to take the color off"

end of quote:

Naturally I have never heard about this method -- do you have more details?

It is unbelievable how did they hate fuel injection system :)

Washed diesel was the cause of my car's black smoke and underpower

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_diesel

Ukraine was great! Constant sunshine, above+30C. Best time was in the mountains - Carpathians.

For 4-6 euro a night you can a bed, and 6-10 bed and breakfast. The surroundings are magnificent:

OK noted (re first link) --> do not feed your car with such diesel otherwise your pocket will become empty repairing fuel injection system.

Re Ukraine - you'd better to fly to airport of Simferopol (Crimea) and afterwards to the South part of the Crimea where there are many resort at competitive price due to crisi time :) and moreover the Black Sea is very good now with its temp of +24-25 C degrees. The water is very pure :)
