Today I Was Mostly Blanking Off My Egr **getto Sytle***

After removing the EGR on the Freelander I was shocked at what I saw after only 10k miles.. It was origonaly blanked off and bypassed, but me being a tad anal wanted everything OEM and manufacturers spec....so I bought a EGR from a scrappy and fitted it 10K ago.

What I found in there when I took it of yesterday was a thick goo of black tar like substance, both in the EGR and in the plastic intake manifold, which I had cleaned 10k previous, how the engine could actually breath through an opening the size of a 1 pence piece is beyond me (Respect to the BMW TD4 M47 engine). any way all cleaned and by pass fitted again. will see how it goes.

Sorry no pics of Freelander as I was covered in the black goo, and did not want to get camera covered in it too, which was in my pocket.....Thats how gooy it was.....Still cant get it of me hands now.............

So onto the Rav

As I have a few days off and the sun is shinning in Jedivil I thought I`d blank off the ravs EGR and see if there is any benifit:

So I pulled off the EGR , nice to see a crisp velverty sooty substance and not a black tar so no problems it that department.

I then set out to make the blanking plate, all high tech this so take note, I opted for my favourite metal, a Kronenbourg 1664 can (only the best) :D

Hacked it to a managable size and Va La!!!!

I now just traced around the origional gasket and cut to shape using a very technical tool called............. a pair of scissors.

Punched out some holes......very roughly as this is only a trial.....

Now I put my home made Getto style Kronebourg 1664 blanking gasket onto the engine block, in place of the origional.

Bolted the EGR back on and off for a test drive...........

Engine was cold, started her up, No CEL everything hunky dory :thumbsup:, when for a little drive until she warmed up, everything still ok, so so far jobs a good en , no problems.

I have noticed and it could all be in my tiny brain.....the engine picks up better at lower revs, like the turbo kicks in earlier.....more grunt lower in the rev range, certainly seems more responsive....but only time will tell.

So what is the point of the EGR? is it just to save a few trees, or does it benifit the engine in any way? So far I see not use for the EGR other than to pass emmissions tests.....

My Mot is due soon so will see what happens when they probe it.

I may up the gasket to a thicker metal like a beans can, but I am unsure whether to go for tescos own brand tin or a branded Heinz tin............I will have to think about that one.

It was all gunked up due to the wrong grade of oil mate! Hahahahaha :P sorrry!... Just couldn't help that one :D I hope the Police dont pull you over and check your car! Or they'll think its been out on the Kronebourg 1664 and be done for driving under the influence! :lol2: :naughty::laughing:

To be honest you cant really beat a baxters soup can, there in a league of there own

You don't want to be touching that soot / goo, work safely and wear gloves. There are all sorts of nasties in super heated carbon, I see loads of threads about cleaning the EGR and blowing off the soot, you should NOT be breathing any of that crud in to your lungs

No wonder I'm not functioning correctly!!! you have a good point....I was not prepared for what I found in there, having only cleaned it all out 10k ago, so just got stuck in :lol:

still need to clean out the intake again on the Freelander but that can wait for warmer weather....plus I dont drive it :D

slow death for me :D

Jedi.

I doubt it will show up on the MOT. It's more for type approval when the vehicle is launched. That might change one day when the MOT stations get better equipment but for now, you will probably find as well as going better, it does more mpg.

I had this sneeky feeling too, the MOT sniff test is pants.....There could be a tyre burning in my exhaust and it would still pass....

My Radar is detecting you may have blanked of your EGR also.....hence super clean oil after what I guess is around 5k miles?

Your radar is a demic Jed. My EGR is the later gate valve super water cooled type and is operating just as it left the factory. It wasn't bust so it hasn't been "fixed"! See No's 3 & 4;

Yeah, the fine soot is nasty stuff - It's a lot like laser printer toner and will go right through a vacuum filter unless it's one of those hospital-grade ones!

But yeah, the EGR is purely for emissions control, doesn't have any benefit to the engine. It's supposed to lower combustion temperature to lower NOx emissions, but as a side effect it makes everything else worse! (CO2, SOx, particulates, fuel consumption...) :lol:

It's only supposed to open when the engine is under a medium to low load, which is why just flooring it on the motorway won't clear out the EGR (Although that will clear out the exhaust pretty good :naughty:). You have to travel as fast as you can while only lightly pushing the accelerator. (So normal long distance motorway driving should be good for clearing it out!)

It's not too bad on the D4D, except when it gets jammed open due to soot building up where it shouldn't, then the car's performance drops off a cliff :lol:

You should go Rallying Jedi, thats the kind of innovation us clubman ralliers do in between stages to repair or manufacture pieces.

If you have watched the Williams F1 team on Mega Factories you'll notice they have 500 people working 24/7 to shave a tenth of a second off by innovating with wind tunnels. If you watch a clubman rally crew in a service area with 10-20 mins to find replace and fix you'll see them innovate to get the job done normally using hacksaws and a selection of hammers oh jaffer tape and tie wraps.

Ive seen a lad make a temp head hasket out of a cornflakes box before to complete the last 8 miles of the day (yes it was for a Rover k series engine).

I have made thermostat housing gaskets out of shoe box cardboard before, for a fiesta i once owned....It worked suprisingly well, never leaked at all. :thumbsup:

We used to use the old style waxed paper milk cartons to make gaskets for the rally cars. No cost and they seemed to work just as well as the OEM ones.

I can picture Jedi as Bodie in the Professional actually :) Where he makes a head gasket for a knackered old Land Rover out of a roll of lino with just a penknife :thumbsup:
