Variable Valve Timing Problem

Hi

I own a toyota avensis 2001 vvti gs model, last week it began to misfire,it also loses power when you drive it i.e when you step on the accelerator it does not pick up at all, and when idle the engine sometimes stops, it also emits white smoke from the exhaust when you drive or rev the engine. I am not totally sure I have been told that it is probably a problem with the variable valve timing and when a diagnostic was taken a number of errors came up one of which was that injector coils 1 and 4 where eratic (pardon the description) so I got 2 new ones from a toyota dealer and we replaced them, so far the garage has looked at the timing chain and a number of other components but the problem still persists, has anyone come up against a similar problem, cheers.

whoever told u it is a vvti issue has clearly led you on the WRONG path..

White smoke can sometimes be an indication of HG faliure.

have a compression and leak test done before you go any futher..

Ok thanks for the pointers guys. I will go back and ask to have both the head gasket and a compression and leak test done.
