It always amazed me how he managed to play all those games for Man-Utd and England how he found the time to screen Chuckle Vision with his brother Phil

MANCHESTER UNITED'S GARY NEVILLE DECIDES TO CALL IT A DAY

Gary Neville is set to join Manchester United’s coaching staff

Thursday February 3,2011

By Richard Tanner

GARY NEVILLE last night confirmed he is retiring from football with immediate effect and is set to join Manchester United’s coaching staff.

Neville, who will be 36 on February 18, was expected to quit this summer after four injury-plagued years, but has decided to hang up his boots now, after making 602 appearances for United in a 19-year career.

There have been suggestions that Neville could join Sky as Andy Gray’s replacement, but United chief executive David Gill said last night that he will continue working for the club in some capacity. Right-back Neville, who won 85 England caps, said: “I am disappointed that my playing days are at an end, however it comes to us all and it’s knowing when that time is. For me that time is now.

“I have been a Manchester United fan all my life and fulfilled every dream I’ve ever had. I have played in the most incredible football teams with some of the best players in the world, as well as against them, and I have been lucky to have been part of the team’s achievements and the club’s great success. There are so many people I want to thank and, of course, top of that list is Sir Alex Ferguson. He has given me so many opportunities and countless support over the last 20 years. He is truly one of the greatest managers.”

Neville won eight Premier League titles, one Champions League, three FA Cups, two League Cups and two World Club championships.

Ferguson said: “Gary has had a fantastic career and was the best English right-back of his generation. He is an example to any young pro with his hard work, loyalty and intelligence.” Gill said: “We thank Gary for his tremendous service, but while this illustrious chapter in his career is finished, his experience, commitment and energy will ensure he will continue to play a part in the life of the club on the coaching or commercial side.”

Neville has managed only four first-team appearances this season and made up his mind his time was up after having a nightmare in the 2-1 win over West Brom on New Year’s Day when he was lucky not to concede a penalty and receive a red card.

Neville later had to be substituted.
