Oil Consumption And Tappety Noise 4Efe

My GF's 4efe engined Starlet has quite high oil consumption and a tappety noise. Mileage is about 60k. My plan was to remove the PCV valve and clean (do I really just pull it out?) and maybe get the valve clearances checked/adjusted at a garage - it seems it involves using shims so don't fancy attempting it.

Edit: cleaning the PCV valve seems to have eased up the oil consumption.
