Shocked By High Insurance Quote On The Rav!

I know this is a topic that turns up a lot but I've just had my insurance renewal from Admiral. They have always been the cheapest insurers for my BMW for the last three years. Last year fully comp with PNCB was £226.00 for the BMW, I replaced the BMW with the Rav4. Imagine my shock this year when Admiral wanted £357.00 to insure the Rav!!!!

I'm 57 with full no claims bonus, no accidents, no convictions, not even a speeding ticket. Mileage is limited to 8000, car is garaged at night, I live in a nice area where car theft is extremely rare but none of this made any difference to the premium.

I finally managed to get a best quote price of £281.00 from Hastings. Does anyone else pay premiums this high on a 2005 Rav4 XT-R diesel, or am I too easily shocked?

I'm 54. Clean license never had a claim since My first car at 17.. Low crime area. Car kept on private drive...

I pay

2006 Rav4 2006 T180 2.2 Diesel 430 odd quid.

Jaguar XF 2010 3.0 Diesel 315 quid...

Same company. same everything except the Jag has nigh on twice the power and is worth 3 times as much money..

Work that one out !!!

It's not the Rav, all insurance has gone up. I've always had best quotes from Toyotas own insurance. I pay £500 fully comp, PNCB, 20k a year, European cover and on drive overnight and 59plate car. I'm 27 :-)

My premiums had not gone up Mate... Its the difference between the two cars I question ? I could understand if the Jag was more expensive..... MMmmmm

That is strange Charlie. I have tried to work out insurance price logic. But it must be so complex that it requires a group of boffins from NASA to work it out.

Wasn,t there an article on the news the other day regarding this senario with insurance companies. If you are a Newbie they always quote cheap, then the next years premium if you stop with them reflects the previous lower quote. In other words they think they have got you hook line and sinker. I tend to go on price comparison sites to get the best quote.

Personally, I have always found Admiral on the upper area when it comes to insurance quotes (but never tried a quote for a beemer). I am also with Hastings currently as the best deal and paid £334 (and that was up a fair bit from my first quote with them due to having to add in a brand new speeding endorsement), so your £357 does sounds a lot!

When I moved a couple of years ago, I had to advise my insurers obviously, and the definition of where my car would be parked changed from a communal car park (higher risk I think) to a private driveway (lower risk?) but that pushed the price UP! go figure that one!

My rav insurance was/is more than my Mazda 3mps. I had to pay extra for the remainder of the year when I first got the rav. The 3mps was a petrol 2.3 turbo with 270bhp! As the yanks say... Go figure.

I pay £480 this year, £450 last year and the Mazda was £350 with declared mods. I just put it down to the crazy premium hikes due to so many uninsured drivers etc...

Edit - I am with aviva, although have previously found admiral/elephant (same company) cheapest.

Aviva with breakdown cover and Homestart tae !!!!!!

Don't forget Confused.com is owned by Admiral.

But yes there is a lazy tax if you can;t be bothered to shop around when renewal time comes. Also premiums are rising and falling because the stock market, where your premiums are invested, is more volatile than 5 years ago.

Insurance was often sold at a loss to get the business, simply because stocks were so profitable. Not so any more, and we now see the true costs of insurance when a £5k whiplash payout also comes with £50k in legal fees.

Very strange, my BMW was a 320D and not worth as much as the Rav so I expected a bit of a price hike, but not £120.00.

Also when I told Hastings that the Rav was fitted with the optional chrome pack they said it didn't make any difference to the price as long as it was a manufacturers option fitted from new. We'll see how that pans out if I ever have to make a claim!

Wish mine was as cheap, i struggled to get mine down to £630 through Adrian Flux. Although i had a non fault accident, and one in dispute at the time of taking the policy. As one claim was in dispute it was entered as a fault.

However that disputed claim has now been resolved in my favour, i informed Adrian Flux, who said i need to send proof in. I sent in the proof provided by churchill, but they would not accept that and said i had to get them to provide a specifically worded letter to the effect that the accident on that day was resolved in my favour. Weeks later churchill still cannot get that done for me. So i continue to pay a higher premium.

Adrian Flux will not be getting any further business from me. They took my word i had an accident, but obviously don't take my work now resolved, they also don't accept churchills standard proof that resolved.

41yrs old, full no claims.

Hastings was a very close second.

Perhaps some of Us are paying a little more because We have better cover ?

My policy of 420 0r 430 cant remember the exact amount gives..

Full European brake down cover and onward travel to ANY destination plus a car for 48 hours if I need it.. (I have used said cover twice now !!)

100 pound excess.. Some are much more.

Legal expenses cover.

Protected NCB

I have declared the Lindop chip which increases power ( No longer on the car)

And an agreed value of 12K. This takes away the haggling in the event of a total loss MMMmmmmmm

Still expensive.... I could have saved a few quid by using the comparison sites but it was just that , A few quid.. 50 or so..

Given the level of cover including the breakdown which I used twice last year.. Once when I filled the car with petrol instead of Diesel. And again when it had the smoking engine episode early this year..

I also used it two years ago when travelling from Home to the Midlands in someone else's car .. Breakdown recovered the car from Penrith to Bromsgrove which is around 220 miles and We were given a Jaguar X type for two days while the car was fixed......

Worth mentioning is that many of these attached breakdown covers will only take the car for 10 or 15 miles.... Just far enough to get off say a motorway and into the hands of a garage who knows they have a captive person.....

so Charlie, your policy is in effect a combination of Motor Insurance AND non-vehicle-specific Breakdown cover? I have tended to discount the breakdown option when looking at quotes as thought it was always very limited.

Will have to look again at the end of the year when the Toyota breakdown is up and insurance near renewal :)

One other way to lower the cost is via cashback sites. I use Quidco a fair bit when buying stuff, and the insurance companies USED TO give very good cashback deals on policies, thought dropped a lot in last two years, but still worth a checkout.

My own steps are: 1) get quotes via Confused.com; 2) Go to the best looking ones direct and get another quote; 3) Check if any of the good ones also do cashback;

Doing that, I ended up with Hastings as the best value cover (not cheapest, but best value ;) ) and also extra cashback via Quidco (extra £30 off :) )

My policy's are with Aviva who used to own the RAC....

My associated breakdown cover is the top most cover that We can buy...

I get all the usual homestart ect ect. Plus full UK and European cover. This means if I am in either of the cars or a car belonging to someone else and I breakdown say in Germany. I/We get that car recovered back to the UK to ANY destination of choice plus they bring Me/Us a car that We can use for 48 hours...

As You might imagine covering the Miles I do and with a disabled Wife I have to have a very comprehensive cover in place... I have used the RAC three times in the last 2 1/2 years and they have been faultless every time...

Consider that most breakdown policy's will get You off say the Motorway and to a garage within 15 miles it has great limitations.. A garage that has a car sat with even a minor breakdown and a car full of people is not going to charge a low rate for fixing the car.....

The cost of My breakdown cover is 55 quid. It is still subsidised By Aviva even though they no longer own the RAC.....

I tried to get a separate insurance and breakdown policy and to get the same level of cover with two separate company's and policy's would have meant another £100...

When i worked for Honda i discovered how expensive some parts for the jap built cars were, especially if they were a low volume part, on Accords things like steering racks were eye watering, add on the shipping etc. This was the reason for the high premiums.

I think the main reason is because they`re 4x4.

Cant understand how some of these insurers decide what to charge.

Wifes Hyundai with me named as the other driver with fully comprehensive cover plus legal protection was last year with churchill cost £185. this year quoted £186 as legal protection had gone up £!. cant complain about that.

but received a phone call from kwik fit who i tried for a quote last year and after checking a few details quoted for the same level of cover £295.

i told them what they could do with their quote.

i Phoned direct line who i am at present with for my Auris and explainedd that i Wanted to fit a genuine Toyota roof spoiler to the car. iwas told that would cost An extra £59 for the rest of the insurence period.that is to july and and on the insurence renewal it would cost me anothed £100.

With admiral, insurence telling them about the mod and the same cover plus NCBP it will be £29 cheaper than my present cover with Direct line.

Have heard on radio that car insurence is going to get cheaper in the future.

Shall not hold my breath.

The RAV appears to be expensive to insure as I have a Honda S2000 - for those of you who are not aware of what it is see here http://www.toyotaown...leryℑ=7869

This will do 0-60 in 6 seconds and see the other side of 150mph on the autobahn :D

I have a few nice declared mods like a full performance exhaust system & manifiold & a K&N induction kit, limited to 6k per year and locked in my garage at night. I get my insurance through a specialised broker as the car is group 20 for around £450, fully comp with protected NCB.

The RAV - yes, it's the T180 and is running the Kingo chip kit (declared to the insurance) with my wife as the main driver, max NCB protected, decent post code, kept on the drive at night comes in at £550 with LV and this was after a lot of shopping around. Some of these comparision websites wanted over £1k before you had even declared the chip kit

How come I get a group 20 sports car insured for less than a group 13 4x4?

Insurance has always puzzled the hell out of me!!
