Drive modes

Are the drive modes basically equivalent to engine remapping

This is Hybrid-specific, rather than general Auris stuff.

The conventional wisdom on here is that Eco/Normal/Power only affects the linearity of the accelerator travel versus throttle signal response.

Eco gives you more travel (control) at the light throttle end, whereas Power gives more travel (control) at the other end - and thus makes the first part of the travel 'do more' making it feel more powerful.

Certainly Eco makes it easier to drive with the green ev light kept lit (which I call EV Running - the petrol engine is off). I don't know if that really is only due to the throttle response curve making feather-footing easier.

My personal impression is that in Power mode, the electric motor does more to assist the petrol (both running together when you open the throttle), but that's just my personal impression. I find it seems 'happier' going up steepish hills in Power mode. (Eco would be great for Norfolk!)

Of course it is possible that the computer is playing all manner of engine parameter remap games beneath the surface, but Toyota's public position is that it is just about the pedal travel versus output signal 'mapping'.

My approach to the car is to treat 'the system' as a 'black box'. It doesn't really matter how it achieves its responses (Toyota guard their secrets), but getting your head around how it responds (the output result of the inputs) is the important thing.
