Toyota App

Hi all

Got a Rav4 on order and waiting for a delivery date!

Question to you guys who have the Toyota App.

How much of your driving information does this app soak up that goes back to your local dealer?
A friend of mine had a test drive back in December 2019 and took the demonstrator out for about an hours drive unescorted.

When he got back the dealer was quite proud to show him the route that he had just been on along with his speed through various sections of his drive etc.etc.

My friend had done absolutely nothing wrong at any point in his test drive but was quite annoyed that he had not been informed of this before he left the garage. He felt that in a way he had been spied on.

He subsequently ordered a Rav4 and has recently taken delivery of his new car and is delighted with it but will not be using the app.

I am assuming that the sales guy had the Toyota app linked to the demo car hence all that information instantly available.

Be interested in opinions of anyone who has this app and exactly what advantages you get out of it

regards Terry.

The demonstrator would have been registered to the dealer and therefore they can register the car on the app, I assume they cant ( wouldn't really want to anyway ) do this with your car when you get it and its only you who can view information about your trips etc, we use our a bit and its interesting to see just how economical you have been driving etc.

For reference it doesn't show you actual speeds reached  (well unless I am doing something wrong) it just shows how hard you have been braking and how hard you have accelerated and the route you have taken.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

So can anybody give me a complete rundown on what this app does?
For instance, my son has a Skoda Kodiak and I am pretty sure he can activate various things from home if he wishes before he gets into the car .

Personally  I am not totally convinced about this Toyota App and its uses.

It doesn't do a great deal, you can set new locations and send them to your sat nav, check service history, find the position of your car, check your fuel.

I find it quite interesting, and useful to send a new destination to the car.

It will be good to see how it interfaces with the potential Apple carplay.Android auto upgrade hopefully available soon.

If you contact Toyota technical support I am sure they could run through all its features for you.

Fuel level is only available on the current model.

I find the app useful as it gives me a good idea of how I'm driving and I can select which journeys are for business. You can then get a PDF report from the app which makes it easier to log work miles.

I would assume that the PHEV version will have charging times and cabin precondition available.

Nothing to do with the app i suspect, demos have a black box to record where and when you have been out, for recording the journey, for security and road safety purposes. It would not be the first time a car is stolen on test drive, or when the customer denies all knowledge of driving at excess speed and denies the fine coming their way. We are responsible for giving the authorities driver details, imagine the arguments if there was no record keeping of exact journey times etc. They are used for very good reason

I had my 2020 rav app installed from new and don’t use it.  The dealership set it up on my phone but I turned my bluetooth off. I don’t do phone calls in the car. Hands free or otherwise.

I was having a coffee whilst out the other day and waiting for my wife opened the Toyota app. It showed where the vehicle was parked. I haven’t had my bluetooth on for a long time but it still got the info to my phone.

I do love my gadgets but for me the app doesn’t offer anything I need. As for sending a route to your car the dealership said how long does it take to put in a postcode, that’s my thinking as well. My wife gets her new Yaris next month. I know she won’t use the app. However I can see a strategy behind it, in years to come people may come to love  it.

Hi Parts-King

That makes sense I guess.

I assumed wrongly that it was the app obviously.

Not sure that it was the right thing for the dealer to do though.

Absolutely  nothing to be gained by telling a potential customer that he had been tracked is there.

Agreed, just makes him look like a boy with a new toy, idiot! Would have been far easier to tell the customer up front, just say what it's for, it logs your journey, speed, distance etc, sounds like this salesman left a lot to be desired

Have you sent your setting to Toyota via the 'Online' part of the settings on the media unit?

The only thing I did was login to the headunit with my toyota id, oh and I registered my carfullyon the Toyota app (i.e entering the details from my v5 that it requested).
