Avensis Verso : 1CD-FTV SCV multiple failures (3 in a year)

Hi All

I have an Avensis Verso (D4D 116 - 1CD-FTV) and never had any issues with it, nor starting, nor power. I mostly drove it through highway, and it is a 2002, with 315 k kms.

The seller, a previous Toyota worker, warned me that, if the power is starting to decrease, this means the SCV are going to fail. I checked about these SCV before buying the vehicle. He also told me that when he had problems with them, it was a lack of power, but could still drive. The Check Engine light was not always lit.

A year ago, one morning, without any previous signs, the Check Engine lit 10 seconds after starting the engine. And then, no power at all (barely past 40 km/h in long straight roads, otherwise 10-20). On the next 10 tries, it occured once or twice that there was no engine light, and full power.

After getting the ECU scanned, the diag was that the SCV were dead. 2 Densos were fitted, and the fuel filter. No problems after, full power.

Then, 6 months and 7000 kms later, same exact thing. Same symptoms. I asked the previous owner if there might be something else (like metal "filings", sorry not sure the word is correct, but I meant small chunks of metal coming from a decaying HP pump). I emptied the fuel filter (see picture below). There were some "filings", but according to him, a failing HP pump is producing much more of these.

I brought the car then to another office, a Toyota Specialist, who changed the 2 SCV, plus a fuel additive. Denso as well, in June 2021.

1 month ago. Exact same behaviour. Not even 5000 kms. The warranty allowed for a full SCV kit change at no price, but I cannot trust it anymore.

For the past 4 years, only supermarket fuel was used. Never had any issue.

In your experience, what can lead to such failures ? The HP pump or maybe somehing else ?

Here is a picture from the metal parts in an emptied fuel filter. All of them are "glued" to my magnetic tool, so it may seem impressive, but that are really small parts.

2002 is a right age tbh think got money out of it at that age i guess things dont last forever. i sold off my 2004 vw group car 1.9tdi for a avensis  and tbh the 1.9tdi was going well its just i had it for 11 years and fancied a change. i notice with the vw group car i had it had lower end torque which i liked compared to my avensis .well the avensis is good and comfortable its a 2014 business edt with 42k on it now got it with 38k

Hi Joe,

yep, you may be right as the SCV failed again this morning (so less than 3000 kms and a couple of weeks only)...

I guess it's time to let her go now 😞

Still, I'm curious of what's happening 🙂
