Hi eveybody!!

Last year i imported a 1990 Toyota hi-ace custom 2.8 diesel automatic 4x4 mini-van its given me no hassels until now, i had to send the injecture pump for a service and ever since then my gears will not change smoothly i have to take my foot off the accelerator then accelerate again in order for the gear to change, if i do not do this the motor will simply stay in the same gear.

Can anyone please give some advice as to what has gone wrong.

Thanks

Tocos,

Did you fit the repaired pump yourself? If so, the most likely cause of your problem is the adjustment to the transmission cable. This is connected to the pump-operating lever, like the throttle-cable, but goes to the gearbox. It should have some slack and can be adjusted by trial and error to give correct change-speeds. Sometimes there is a choice of holes in the pump-lever and if you use the wrong hole, that will affect change-speeds.

Hope that helps

there is also a sensor on top of the pump again you will have to try moving one way or the other.if you look down onto the pump there is a black round sensor if you turn it to far one way the gear box will not kick down at all. to far the other way will keep it in a low gear. put it in the middle and you will find this will cure your problem . dont forget to check that you have connected the kick down cable on the accelerator.

Little lead ferrule should just be visible on kickdown cable on full throttle.....does ect on/off affect?....sounds like kickdown too tight.....

I found I needed a crowsfoot to initially crack the adjusting nut.....

Mark...does this throttle sensor only do this on ect function? I know it knocks the air con off approaching full throttle...but always wondered what else it does

Mark...if you put ignition on....then gas pedal to floor ...you will hear a click at about 70-80% gas...I was told this click is what knocks out the air con....ie: power when you need it.

If you find different please post though....I had some understanding of what it did on our primera, but its function is more of a mystery on the hiace for me

i will try that but i still think my air con stays on

have you also got the fridge in the middle. if anything i have to switch of

ac if i am climbing a hill as it does slow engine down a lot.

dont know if you have same problem as mine but when engine is hot i seem to have no guts in engine.

Don't have the coolbox Mark...know what you mean about the feeling that the engines gutless when hot though....when I get paranoid (not too often i might add)I hook up a multimeter with temp function....seems to run best around 80 deg +(side of block) but feels more sluggish as it gets to 90+. Mine tend to run 89-91 most of the time.

The air con does sapp a lot of power...I still leave mine on almost 24/7.

I always used to switch of the air con when I wanted more power too.....can't be bothered any more though, as its such a small difference

You could check for air in the cooling system ....mine draws a little on cool down.....if air is in, it will over pressurise the system a little....making it run hotter than normal and making the pump work harder.

Guess a thermostat rated lower than the 88deg one (82 deg?)may be worth a try, if you feel its worth the hassle.

I did wonder if the gutless feeling was just an illusion though....guess only time trials with a stop watch would prove....worth bearing in mind that the viscous fan saps a lot of power too....so when the engines hot the viscous fan is an additional load on the engine

If your power drop is really severe then it may be worth taking it too a deisel specialist for a timing check and tune up....
