Can anyone help

x reg avensis vvti has suddenly started knocking badly [lent it to someone] he reported back saying big ends gone...!! on getting it back to mine am not convinced.. sounds more top endy.. took cam cover off no sign of damage,but did notice if i push cam chain in between sprockets chain goes loose and chain tensioner moves and does not re-tension chain... anyone know of a problem with these and if sticking tensioner would cause knocking..
