Expected MPG

Hi All,

Our Avensis has now had a raft of suspension work, tyres, brake caliper etc. Made it 20 miles and it blew an injector seal. So those are all done now as well. I'm just going through and fixing small bits. Washers, broken number plate light, missing under bonnet trim clips etc. Loving it. Total spend around £2600 (including purchase of the car) for a car that now appears to have everything sorted. EGR looks clean, alternator appears new. Clutch feels fine, no timing chain noise.

So far its been with me on Motorway trips for work. Sole occupant, no luggage. Then its been to the mother in laws, 4 occupants, full luggage, dog and trailer. Then to Glasgow, 4 occupants, luggage.

It doesn't seem to matter what I do, empty or loaded, it's doing 39-42Mpg according to the computer. I was expecting more. Am I right to?

What are people getting out of there 2010 onwards diesels?

Many Thanks, Daniel

Hi,

I am not a diesel owner or specialist but with the cold weather and the car size and use this mpg seems ok to me. Perhaps summer time will improve a bit. But before we made any conclusion best to double check the fuel consumption manual fill full and drive a bit then refill and check again. 👍

We had a 2012 Avensis 2.0 diesel for several years and found the dash MPG display surprisingly pessimistic. The dash would show an average of around 42 MPG on local trips and 46 on longer runs, but the reality when measured manually was consistently 4-5 MPG higher.  I don't know if this margin of error was common on the Avensis or if it was just ours.

Having said that, they are not the most economical engines as diesels go. I did get better fuel economy from the VW and PSA diesels I owned previously.

I'd expect a bit more than that. I used to drive a 2002 Corolla 2.0 D4D and would get anything from 40 - 60+ MPG. To get it down to around 40 required very "progressive" driving.  Most of the time you'd get 47-55 any time of the year. While this was an earlier model than yours, it would seem reasonable to expect at least as good from a 2010 model.

EDIT: For some reason my brain read "Auris" and not Avensis. In which case, your figures are probably about right. Although, I'd expect to be able to do 50 in an Avensis without too much effort.

  • 2 weeks later...

2.0 d4d 2011

33mpg round town

40 - 44mpg  on a run

50 mpg trying my absolute best from mpg.......50 mph/freewheeling etc

23mpg when towing a caravan which is terrible but its far to hgh geared. Never get into 6th at all.

Pretty dire really if you compare against a 2.0l VAG diesel. Just as well its reliable!
