Auris electrical problems

I have a 2009 Toyota Auris 1.33vvti, there was water in the rear passenger side tail light, water was removed and bulb changed. Bulb still didn't work and now the power steering, blowers and the headlight dashlight no longer work and the fan turns on when you turn off the car and shuts off immediately when you turn the car on.

Have you checked the basics like the fuses, it sounds like you may have blown several, water and electrics don't play nice together.

Having said that the fan coming on and going off in the manner you describe seems very strange and may be an indication that one of the electronic control modules has failed.

You may well have to get the car to a good auto electrician if it's nothing basic.

Had similar experience with my son's old 2010 BMW X1 earlier this year. Replaced the old Battery and inadvertantly shorted the terminals. Car seemed fine initially but wasn't in regular use. First time it was used,to go for MOT, he found all his lights, indicators etc not working, and all the dash warning lights on. Failed the MOT of course but was advised it was likely to be a failed control unit, BMW call them a footwell control module. Toyota likely have a similar piece of electronics in your Auris. Nothing you want to hear at this time of year Laura.

Assuming you Auris wiring is similar to our older Corolla, there are 3 fuses that would be the most likely ones to have blown causing your failures.

 If you see your cars handbook it should show their location , may be in the engine bay or behind the glove box.

15A Tail fuse,   15A Dome fuse ,  10A Gauge fuse   - the latter two probably in the engine bay.

Most of these fuses can be checked with the naked eye and  there may be some spares already supplied in the fuse boxes.

Is that something you or someone nearby can easily check out  ?

Check your earth points. Especially in the boot area. A corroded earth connection can cause all sorts of gremlins.

Thank you, all fuses have been checked now the tailights work and power steering is back but the fan is still coming on when you take key out

Do not have the electrical diagram for your model, but generally the Blower motor is a totally separate circuit to the lights.

The center console units often have a mass of electronics behind those switches and displays so difficult to say if your rear lights water may have damaged something ??

Assume you are disconnecting the Battery to stop the fan running ?

Again assume the fan problem did start with the rear lights shorting, rather than after someone worked on the car ?

Afraid you will need someone with more detailed car electrical experience to locate the real problem,  a Toyota dealer or an Auto Electrician if you don't have a good local garage than can help.

Which fan? Rad fans or blower motor fan?

Its the rad fan that's turning on. Also the ac/heating is not turning on, no power going to it. I am so confused, hopefully I'll get someone to look at it next week.
