2013 Rav4 clunk noise in rear of vehicle

Every time I back out of my driveway, make a left or a right into a parking lot, I get a clunk coming from the rear of the vehicle. Sometimes it sound like it's on the left side, sometimes the right. I've had it  to my mechanic and he checked out every thing in the rear and found nothing mechanically wrong. I emptied every thing from the inside of the vehicle and still get the clunk. I was told when the Rav4 get older it a frame noise. I only have 107,000 on the Rav. Anybody else have, or heard of this issue before. Thanks

Hi Matty, while less likely with only 107,000 miles, worn sway bar bushings, strut mounts, or control arm bushings can cause clunking noises. These components can develop play over time, allowing metal parts to contact each other and creating the clunk.

Double check that your wheel nuts are properly torqued. Loose wheel nuts can cause a clunking sound, especially when turning.

Your exhaust system hangs underneath the car and uses hangers to keep it in place. If an exhaust hanger is broken or bent, the exhaust pipes could be hitting the chassis, causing a clunking sound.

Even though you emptied the car, there's a chance something is rolling around in the boot or luggage area that could be causing the noise.Get a second opinion from a mechanic who specialises in Toyotas or SUVs.

Pay attention to see if the clunking happens more when you turn left or right, or if it's more pronounced over bumps. This can help narrow down the source of the noise.Hope this helps

My Mk4 has a reverse clunk but I am strongly suspecting that is the brake pads shifting around slightly in the calipers.

Other things it could be are perished bushes - My 2nd Mk1 D4D started making clonking noises and it was the anti-roll bar droplinks, specifically the rubbers had disintegrated on them. (I replaced them with some polyurethane ones and never had to touch them again! )
