I think my car is jinxed, a puncture at ten days of ownership, then a near miss with a couple of deer, dropping my garage door on the front marking the paintwork and a crazy learner driver, and now this……..

at work today one of the district nurses who visit scraped the side of my car, parking is a bit tight but it’s been like it for years, not sure if he drove in or reversed out when he did it but it wasn’t a big car..an aygo, there wasn’t a mark on his that I could see ( typical) , anyway, I’m trying to avoid going through both our insurance and have sent him a couple of quotes for a smart repair, not heard back yet so I will call him tomorrow if I don’t..

Hi Alan, i don't think your car is jinxed Its just s**t happens like this sometimes.Once you get this period over you will probably have no problems again.

That is all a nuisance for sure, hope it's all easily sorted.

Sometimes we all just have a good run of bad luck.

Thanks don, problem I’ve got is having somewhere to get it done, I’m hoping it can be done at work otherwise it will mean taking a day’s holiday to get it done at home, and I have precious few of those, I guess they don’t work weekend’s either..

The guy who scratched my car has given me the go ahead to get it repaired from chips away, there’s a disclaimer with the quote saying that I might have to get the ADAS safety systems recalibrated ( at my cost) , do you think this will require it, as it’s just a scuff on the front corner?, any ideas how much Toyota will charge for this if I have to get it done?

That’s the official method and it certainly would apply if the bump had misaligned the bumper.  The rest depends on the skills of the smart repairer.  If he works with the bumper on and doesn’t budge that black panel under the Badge, he won’t need to.  I’ve never seen a smart repair that doesn’t show after a year or two so I go to a decent body repair shop.

I'd have a go at T Cutting that, you'll be surprised at the results.  At least you'll have a better idea of the extent of the damage 👍

Almost all Toyota dealers outsource that sort of work so I'd be surprised if they could quote for it competitively.

The people that underwrite the smart repair insurance mine came with are Shine! and they did an amazing job repairing mine - I reckon even anchs would have trouble spotting the repair!  

The guy spent hours just for a 2cm scratch and had IR lamps and all sorts out to cure each layer before he did the next, and he even re-did the ceramic coating over the whole area so even the water ran off the same - Was very impressed as previous experiences with mobile scratch repairs were nowhere near that level of quality.

Alas the cover is ending at the end of this month, although surprisingly they haven't pestered me to renew which is a weird and unusual experience

 

I think the ADAS thing is just because a lot of cars have proximity sensors in the bumper, and if they take it off to do the work, they may need recalibrating - The Toyota ones are self-calibrating to my knowledge, it's only the camera pod in the windshield that'd need calibrating.

He’s also said to send my bank details over to him so he can transfer the money, I’m a bit wary of doing this just in case it’s an elaborate scam, the guy is a district nurse who comes to our care home on a frequent basis so I doubt this is the case, I’m assuming he just wants sort code and account number…will I be ok doing this..?

He can't get into your account without username and passwords. All he can do with your account name, sort code and account number is pay into your account. Tradesmen request payment this way all of the time when they give you their account details; if providing these details was an issue none of the tradesmen would request payment this way.

Or as Jeremy Clarkson discovered, sign you up to charities via Direct Debit

Those are the 3 things you need to add a third-party payee in most online banking things so probably okay.

You could also use PayPal if you both have PayPal accounts, but then you'll both have each others names and addresses instead, which may be more of a concern than bank details!

I know, even the street hustlers/beggars have card machines now apparently.

But cash does cut out all the complication of funds going astray and phantom transactions that seem so common.

So I'd suggest, get the price, get the cash upfront, give him a copy of the receipt.

ADAS is a wide term, in the front of the yaris that would be the camera on the screen, parking sensors in the bumper or milliwave radar just below the front Badge (nose, behind the bumper)

And account name. The bank transfer system now checks that the destination account name matches the number* - to try and avoid people sending money to a wrong account by getting a number wrong. 

So if you don't give him the name he has to send it 'blind', so to speak, which isn't in either of your interests.

( * It will tell you if it's a match, partial match or not a match. Possibly other permutations, but I've only had the first two ... so far.)
