I am trying to get Apple car play to work on my car do I need a new unit or an adapter for it? If so any recommendations

Android Auto/Apple carplay weren't available on the second generation pre-facelift (2014-2018).  Some models post facelift (2018-2021) had a different head unit with Auto/Carplay - charactrised by three buttons on the unit rather than two. Several members have swapped their head unit for the newer one, see:
