Had A Bit Of A Scare!

Might be an idea to see if you could get a place on a skid pan course.

They are usually run by Police/Local road safety people and can be very enlightening.

I went on one years ago and it taught me quite a lot about handling skids.

Give your local police a call and see if they do any in your area.

Glad you came to no real harm

Steve when you had a go in the skidpan was it in your car?

No, It was many years ago on the Bedfordshire Police force skid pan at Tempsford airfield Bedfordshire and they had some Ford Sierras, and a couple of large ex police Vauxhall patrol cars.

The skid pan was covered with slick oil and several water puddles.

It was great fun...........................must try to do it again sometime

Ahh, becuase really techically speaking its better to learn how to correct your car etc, but saying that its all good fun and you still probably learn alot

I always used to try to be first in at work after it had snowed where there was a massive EMPTY car park and I could get a little bit of "refresher training" in.

I no longer work at that site so sadly do not get the chance to practice in the snow :(

That is why I would like to try a skid pan course again

iv found when something scares you, my leg proper shakes loads and i find it hard to set off smoothly and stuff..

When i drove away from the traffic warden that was a prime example, jerky changes and wheelspinny set offs

Matt that's called "Disco Knee", i got it on one of my driving tests...

Incedentally we have a corner near us which is an utter sod, chriscanavan will know where i mean, top of Hough Lane mate?

Its literally an L shaped (right angled) left hand turn, take it a bit sharpish and you will either lose your back end in the wet or end up in the path of oncoming traffic!

Glad nothing was harmed anyway hun!

It's not nice getting a scare like that :(

What I have found is if you try get the rear to step out, it never does (unless seriously provoked). But when you're not wanting it to step out, it can go in an instant

Some say the stock rims and tyres are the best for the MK1 - although going up to 15's won't hurt as long as you keep the rolling radius in perspective. Don't go too large a rim and drop the profile on the tyre down too much as the car relies on a bit of flex from the tyre wall. Always make sure the tyre pressures are set to the correct levels as advised in the owners manual.

Keep things really easy for a while until you get used to the car. Find an empty private car park or road and use it/them in both the dry and the wet to get a good feal as to where the limits of the car are.

HTH
