Camry V6 Loss Of Power On Acceleration

Hi,

I have joined this forum in the hope that someone may be able to help.

I have not been able to find a suitable existing thread.

I have a 92 Camry V6 3.0 with a full service history. it's done 195 K miles.

The engine starts and runs fine but when I try to accelerate hard, it feels like the engine is being switched off intermittently very fast.

Ie on pressing the accelerator, the engine dies for a moment , recovers and then dies agin.

This can happen 2 or 3 during acceleration up to maybe 60 mph.

The problem does not occur if the accelerator is only lightly pressed.

Strangely enough, once at spped, the car will sit at 80 or 90 mph and not miss a beat.

I therefore do not think it's fuel pressure.

It has had a Toyota diagnostic and there were no error codes stored in the system.

Toyota UK was contacted and they did not know what it was.

They suggested perhaps the air flow sensor but this was only an educated guess.

Toyota want £500 for a new air flow meter.

Scrap yard offer a used on for around £100.

My question is , has anyone had a similar problem and what was their eventual root cause?

Is there a new air flow meter supplier other than Toyota?

Thanks

Graham
