A chief constable who specialises on road policing is being prosecuted for speeding.

South Yorkshire Police have confirmed that Meredydd Hughes has been accused of an alleged offence in North Wales - reportedly doing 90mph in a 60mph area.

Mr Hughes is the roads spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO).

Wrexham Magistrates' Court said the case was listed for November 21.

The South Yorkshire force issued a statement confirming an "intended prosecution".

The statement said it was "in respect of an alleged driving offence in North Wales in the early morning of a Bank Holiday Monday in May while he was on holiday".

According to the force's website, Mr Hughes was promoted to deputy Chief Constable in South Yorkshire in September 2002.

He was appointed to his current role of Chief Constable from 1 September 2004.

For ACPO, he chairs the Roads Policing Enforcement Technology Committee and the Drivers Project, placing new databases such as driver and motor insurance records on the police national computer.

Married with one son, his hobbies include rock climbing and mountaineering, running, and mountain biking.
