Gearbox Bearing

Last week my W reg toyota avensis (5 gear manual petrol 1.8) started making some noise, I took it to a local garage near my work and he reckons its the gearbox bearings. The car has done about 74000 miles.

When I called the toyota dealer, they said they can check it and give me a report as to what is wrong. When I talked with some other garage, the bloke there said he'll get an exchange gearbox and replace the whole thing, and quoted me about £650 to do that work. My worry is, the exchange gearbox might come from a died toyota which would have done more miles than my current gearbox.

Just wanted to find out from eveyone what should be the best thing to do?? I am completely stumped!!

TIA,

SP

Had both draftshaft bearings done at 90k miles 1.8 2001 Avensis for £400 by a gearbox specialist. Mt T wanted £800. Now on 100k and so far so good. I assume that this is the same as what you call the gearbox bearings ? I would steer well clear of a gearbox exchange unless the garage is offering a pretty good warranty to go with it.

Can you please pass on the details of the garage. I am in Windsor.

I had a whinning noise start on my Avensis 2001 at 40,000 it was main bearing in gearbox. Had it stripped down and replaced. 500 quid it cost me! Apparently it was a known issue with the bearing. My car was of course out of warranty. The bearing itself is just a small ball bearing effort-engineer showed me-but its either that or reck your gear box!!!

£200 quid sounds a bargain. What did they diagnose and what did they do though ?

Unfortunately with the price of petrol it would cost me nearly 100 quid in petrol just to get to Sheffield :D

He knew straight away what it was and he replaced the part by stripping the G/box, i was very impressed by them although i have worked in the motor trade selling cars for years too and i always took cars that needed transmission jobs to them - proper outfit.

and if I drive the car with the duff bearing, there are more chances of me wrecking the gearbox

Well, I have also decided to do the same thing, taken it to a specialist transmissions place on saturday, he knew it straightaway and seemed to be an honest person (that's what matters). I dropped the car for fixing it today and earlier got a call from him detailing it. The gearbox is fine, its only the bearings and the money is mainly for labour. While they are at it, I am also replacing the clutch at parts only price (zero labour). The total bill is a little north of £700. I'll give the post the details of the garage once I am convinced that I can recommend them.

Like I had said in the previous post, everything seems alrite. The car is running much better and quieter now. The garage where I got the gearbox reconditioned are called 'CAR GEARS' and they are based in Woodley, Reading. I will recommend them if you have a similar problem.

Last week my W reg toyota avensis (5 gear manual petrol 1.8) started making some noise, I took it to a local garage near my work and he reckons its the gearbox bearings. The car has done about 74000 miles.

My Y reg started making a bit of a whine at 54000 miles (although I'm now suspicious it's done more than that). The whine was only when there was load on the transmission (accelerating or engine braking) and was wheel speed dependent but not load dependent. I took it to a Toyota dealer who reckoned it would be (brace yourselves) £1600 to fix it. The mechanic did say I should be able to get a reconditioned one for £600.

I should have got it done though, as it rapidly started getting worse a few thousand miles later, while I was away for Easter just gone. The car is now at a garage in Fort Augustus, the Highlands, and I suspect the bearing's disintegrated, lodging bits of bearing all over the transmission.

My question is, how can I tell that any particular second hand gearbox is right for my car? I've got lots of quotes from 1stchoice.co.uk (which is brilliant) ranging from £300-£450 plus delivery, some offering up to 6 months warranty. One even offered a 6-speed and claimed it's the same fitting - is that possible? Should I ask for the reg of the car it's coming out of?

Thanks

Mike

Get the 5 speed box

The 6 speed is most likley for the diesel.

I would look on eBay

I see one on for £150.00 with warranty ;)
