Sounds odd because like the others here, i'd have thought the problem stems from a service item. I.e. Air filter/Plugs/Etc.. If you have had the 'rolla serviced recently. You'd think that these items would have been changed, if neccesary. Did they change the filters?? It may be best to go and have a chat with that mechanic! A car should run better subsequent to service!

Mind you. I recently bought a little Suzuki Swift(great lil motor). Where, nowhere recent in the service history was an air filter included. In fact, all the mechanics had done was mess with the tick-over and timing! When i got the filter out of there it was minging.. Like it hadn't been changed in a decade!! After putting a fresh filter in the car was improved no end, but untill it was tuned properly, it ran like a bag of s#it!!

Hope you get the old girl running sweet again soon :D

Chances are that the problem lies with one of three things...the spark plugs, the plug leads, or the coil... the 4efe engine that is in your car needs twin tipped plugs to run as best as possible... With the mileage thats on it, plug leads could also have reached the end of their life.. the coil should be the last resort because this is the rarest of the three to go, in my experience anyway, and ive worked on and sold hundreds of these Corollas... By any chance, have you washed down your engine lately?

Right Miss Molly

You asked this -

my rolla done that this evening!!! its been a bit jumpy in the mornings and i blamed the cold. but i done it in the evening time today and it actually took a while to start!!! any suggestions???

So people have tried to help :-

For example I suggested this:

Not saying it is this but -

MAP sensor mounted on bulkhead behind injection unit - three wires going to it - any broken?

Temperature sensor - mounted on side of air filter box -is it 'pushed in correctly' or again any wires broken going to it.

Also - before this recent 'problem' all happened did the 'revs' when ideling/sat at traffic lights etc. seem to 'burble'/flutter up and down (almost try to stall but then 'pick up again)?

To which you replied:

hey twincam thats all double dutch to me!! but about the revs thing. ehhh i always do that in traffic, bad clutch control and i stall now and again lol

Later on I again tried to help:

This fault (if it WAS serviced corectly and NO wires were knocked when engine bay was 'decorated' ) tends to make me think it still is the MAP sensor area - apart from 3 wires breaking that go into it (which I mentioned earlier) the Vacumn tube and 'one way' valve along it that connects it to the inlet manifold can get clogged with oil vapour (cost of new tube is under a fiver) and thus gives the ECU wrong readings (makes it run richer /black smoke etc.), at 98,000 mile this is another likely cause. Also this fault will NOT necessarily trigger a code and inturn throw the MIL light on.

And again YOU replied with this:

mollycorolla Posted Yesterday, 06:32 PM

wow all that went straight over my head!! wish i could understand

Also others tried to help -

E.g:

ae102 Posted Yesterday, 10:48 PM

have you done the self diagnostic test?

bridge terminals TE1 and E1 - look under the bonnet, lil black plastic cover with dianostic written on it (paper clip is handy for this, i use wire with stripped ends) and count the flashes the check engine light does on the dash board with the engine running. tell me how many flashes and in what sequence and we can take it from there.

And then another example of someone tring to help -

toyota-gt-irl Posted Today, 02:27 PM

Yet in every case you seem to 'laugh' the suggestions off !?

Why?

Initially you ask for help - and then make out you are not bothered!

I fully respect you have limited knowledge (my knowledge too is VERY limited compared to the excellence of some members on here) of where things are but our suggestions did pin point the locations of said items (and you would not have even got your hands dirty :D ).

I hope no offense has been caused to you by me mentioning this.

At the end of the day I and other members were only trying to be of assistance

:)

MAP sensor, Temperature sensor, bridge terminals TE1 and E1, the coil?? i wasnt laughing off any suggestions and i appreciate everyones input into helping me out. i apologise if i came across as rude. sorry twincam. :(

I'm ashamed to say that Molly & I are in the same boat with regard to specialist knowledge . If something goes wrong (it doesn't  ) I go to a garage to get it fixed. Only thing that ever happened was when I caught a BMW on the motorway & wrecked my gear box. Previous owner had had a new 5th gear put in @ 60k. Odd! Mechanic reckoned that he hadn't got a new cog, merely the old one dickied up

I often wonder, reading the posts , whether all the wonderful equipment listed by Molly is really an advance. As far as I know, my nearly 18 y.o. doesn't have any of them. It just goes & goes & goes (Touch Wood )

One of the two local Filling Stations here had the reputation of getting water in its tanks after heavy rain. It didn't do anyones car much good. The place has had a total remake & there is no problem now :)

Don't know much about the various engines either, but it seems the engines in the RAV4s are not that keen on Supermarket petrol so the Corolla engines could well be the same - I avoid the stuff as much as possible, especially Tesco :fear:

Personally, I stay away from the oily bits after I decided to remove and clean up the EHT leads on a Ford I borrowed and had no perception they had to go back in particular order - and for some reason the car wouldn't start afterwards :g::blush:

I don't use supermarkets unless i'm running on fumes!!

My CTS always feels a lot more sluggish on supermarket fuel.

Strangely enough though, my local Shell garage is cheaper than Asda!

If the fuel tank has water in it, remember that petrol will sit on top of the water(like an oil slick), so the water will be at the bottom of the tank beside the fuel pump. Perhaps the water has gone since it didn't happen today, but beware.

If it still happens, you might need to drain the water off. Also, I dont think your fuel filter will like water in it- it might be full of emulsion as a result. Worth having a look at it.

Glad to hear the problem was just a bit o' water!!

Just goes to show how difficult it can be to diagnose auto problems via these forums, but you got there in the end huh!! :D

What hardly anyone switched onto here, is that the problem wasn't continuous. Thus ruleing out the ignition/sensors/filters..

Quite an odd thing to occur, water ingress. Now the problem's been indicated and solved, it seems obvious!! Of course!!

Many miles motoring, trouble free! I hope.. :D
