Rattling Noise

Hi, im new to this forum so I didn't quite know where to post

Just recently my engine has started to make a tapping/rattling noise at the back/left side of the engine and I dont quite know what it is, has anyone else had this problem?

I was told to look at the tensioner/timing chain any ideas or ways to test to see if it is that. i don't really want to have to try and take things apart :S it is a gen7 52 plate (Tsport)

Also another thing, when I am at low revs and put my foot down (when the engine is labouring) it makes a loud squeeking noise and sounds as if the belt is slipping?? common with these cars?

Thanks

The only way to be sure about the cam chain, tensioner etc is to take the end cover off and check. It's important that the chain is tensioned correclty.

Yeah, it's important to have a look.

But as already mentioned, with those symptoms like the belt slipping then I'd say there's a good chance it's the auxilliary belt tensioner. It's very common on 1ZZ and 2ZZ engines.

Been driving mine around for the last 2 years with rattle from the same spot, but if i keep the revs under 3500 the rattle disappears???

the chain tensioner ends up with a sort of tram line where the chain has been rubbing , only cure is a new tensioner to take up the free play . its hardly death threatening for the engine, but should be adressed in time.

Regarding the chain tensioner, is it worth just changing it or is it best to replace the complete timing kit.
