Door Trim

Hi there,

I'm new to this forum so hello to everyone.

I have 99 Avensis, the rear passenger door trim warped and then caught on the front door one and then cracked the end.

How easy are these to get off and replace? haven't started to do job yet, cos it's !Removed! freezy.

Does anyone know if there is a workshop manual out for the Avensis yet? Haynes site says no.

Do you mean the exterior door protection strips?

If so I would think they are easy to replace, just rip them off and put a new one on.

As regards a manual no there isn't one (you dont tend to need them for Toyota's!) If you have the pre-VVT-i Avensis then the CarinaE Haynes manual should cover most mechanical aspects as they are very similar.

Yes it is the outside protective trim. Didn't think it would be too bad but thought I'd ask first.

Thanks for the advice, and I'll look out for CarinaE book.

FFS i need to go up the road and give derby a slap.. I've got the same problem on my 98 avensis..

I hate to say it but these cars are built like crap.. sure the engine is smooth and theyre nice to drive... but thats about it.

The trim is falling off (not suprising really as its glued on with some crap) , the roof lining is coming away from the window, the bonnet is chipped to %$( from stone chips which wouldnt normally create a problem to any decent car, and i have 40% compression on one cylinder for no apparent reason.

I've ownerd toyotas for years.. my supra is IMMACULATE compared to this crappy avensis. The new ones just aint built like the old ones..

sorry.. just having a whinge... yes i know its five and a half years old but please..

My mate used to work at Burnaston, and is proud to say ' I helped build that' ..jees in future i suggest he keeps quiet.

Thats because there made in Britain and not from Japan! Sorry to say so... but the avensis doesnt compare to my old carina II in terms of quality of manufacture.

Sorry dude,

But I love mine and just want to keep it in good order. I've had a one or two Jap cars over the years and always thought they were far better build and spec than others.

You should see some of the crap I testdrove, before I couldn't stop myself from getting the Avensis.

I tried a brandnew KIA (or should tin box on wheels)

A year old Suzuki Wagon R+ (or should I say Wagon aRRRRRgggghhhh  , I thought the thing would squash under my weight when I got in, dinky toy or what!! The wife didn't feel safe in it. BTW I only weight 12 stone.)

A year old Megane, road and wind noise was deafening, plastic everywhere and way too light to drive.

So no contest and it was three years older than the rest, I wasn't looking for a big car, but when I got in, it felt right, it felt safe, and great to drive  . Needless to say I'm sure to keep with the range until I decide otherwise. :group-cuddles:

I would have to agree with most of the criticisms of the Avensis, I am dissapointed with mine and wish I had kept my old Primera, although that was also British made it was far more solid than the Avensis (although the new Rennis Primera is less Solid than the Avensis).

The side strips have gone on mine aswell, as well as a few rattles, sunroof that keeps playing up, brakes than keep squeeling etc.

The engine and gearbox are superb though, but my friends CarinaII is far better and my dad's 98 Camry is aswell - the Japanese make far better cars.

Quality control standards might be the same across the world in Toyota Plants, and all meet those standards, but the Japanese are capable of exceeding those standards.

so.. has anyone found a decent way of sticking the crappy trim back down? Theres no point in buying a new one as the thing is glued on anyway, and the door/door skin will probably fall off if i try and pull the rest off to replace it.

I was thinking of aralditing it...

I must admit that is what's bothering me. <_<

It seems like it's gonna be a pig to get off, and once you put a new one on, your certain that it will probably come off again.

Is it just glued on, or does it also have studs holding it on aswell?

as far as i know its just glued on.. this thing was built in the UK and clips would have been too expensive :D

all i can see under the trim is glue...

the annoying thing is i keep forgetting and just opening the door, and now its prising the drivers trim off as well when it gets caught underneath it..

Glued and clipped, i remember the bodyshop saying they filled the holes and the channel when i had them took off.

It was catching before like all yours and i used aradite Adi to put it back on but after a few month's the git use to catch again :ffs:

Well .... I've had my Avensis GS Estate now for 2 weeks

68k on clock when bought - ex fleet car & its in pristine

condition . Put together in 2002 so I guess build quality

has improved somewhat .

So far I'm well pleased .........!

well yes, you've only had it two weeks and its only one and half years old ! The owner who has it in four years time will inevitably be saying different.

Mines a 98 GS Saloon and ive owned it for 2 years. In that time (apart from the groaning clutch which was there when i bought it) absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it! Paint is perfect, trims perfect inside and out, no squeaks rattles or leaks (it has just turned 40k),100% car (shame its so !Removed! boring!!), never mind when the kids leave home ill get something a bit more exciting. :D

Try that "without nails" stuff for fixing the strips. It works a treat!

Well local Toyota dealer finally got back to me about trim, £59 inc vat. Pigging ripoff (no pun intended), it's only plastic for goodness sake. Does anyone know if I could get it anywhere cheaper. :help:

P.S. I want a TOC sticker or screen strip, where can get them from?
