Ignition Problem

Hi i have a 98 avensis and have problems with the ignition it failed to start and the aa said its the ignition and connected 2 wires to by pass the ignition so effectively have to hot wire the car to start.my question is does this mean i have to replace the complete ignition or is there an alternative. thanks
