Insurance Inflation

Insurance is annual, so anyone not looking for insurance quotes 3-4 weeks before their renewal is due deserves to pay extra with the current insurer for not doing anything about it.

You don't get your renewal quote until a couple of weeks before renewal time so until then you wouldn't know if you have to shop around or not

Also,it would be nice if us careful drivers were looked after instead of being screwed for the inconsiderate :censor: who make our premiums go up in the first place :ffs:

You won't know the renewal price, but you know when it is due so you can shop around for the cheapest prices in advance.

I know that my renewal will land on my mat 10-14 days before its due, but i will still look for the cheapest price so that i have the maximum amount of time in order to barter them down, or move elsewhere.

Does that work for you? I found if I try to search too far in advance, I ether get stupid quotes (i.e. hugely inflated) or get denied a quote completely because I already have car insurance!

My 'safe' window is normally about 2 weeks before my current insurance expires I find...

Maybe we should get the forum modders to give our cars total overhauls so they get re-classified as Kit cars instead!

Or... how long do I need to keep my Yaris for before it's classed as a classic car??

The price very rarely differs between dates, so you can try getting a quote for up to 2 weeks in advance.

I've always found a cheaper quote than the renewal quote, and usually you can get the insurer to match it if you make them aware that you have looked for a better price.

The only thing you have to lose is a few mins of your time, and if people can sit on this forum and moan about the cost of insurance, then they have spare time to look for a better deal!

I am paying just over £2400 a year for my insurance, also had to change from direct line who I have been with years after they refused to allow me to change my insured car again. :ffs:

If I was to pay the whole year off that would have been £1445 as a special deal from the insurance company but unfortunately I did not have the money to pay off the whole year and just for the added benefit of paying monthly, I get charged an extra £1000!

I have had quotes far cheaper for big cars like BMW 740i V8 at £1800 a year, it seems insurance companies have it all wrong and the most dangerous cars such as little peugeots and corsas are now the cheapest to insure! (Whilst some will argue that those cars are safer for younger drivers, bear in mind that they will still take them to higher speeds but such cars lack good brakes, suspension and the handling of mid-engine RWD :P)

I guess I will just keep working on building that no claims bonus!

Someone kindly explained this to me the other day

Same reason why its cheaper to insure a Supra then an MR2. Supras are not cheap and therefore tend to be driven by older/more experienced drivers - MR2's are cheap as chips (£1500 for a 300BHP car cheap enough?) and tend to be driven by younger/less experienced drivers, who statistically crash a whole lot more. OK we could all point to several examples of older people driving the cheaper cars and crashing them a lot, and vica versa but those are some of the stats insurance companies see and use.

Insurance companies work off statistics not the same logic that we as car enthusiasts use.

Not sure i agree with that...

I've been toying with the idea of changing my car for either a Supra or a GT4

For my budget that's an older non turbo Supra or a slightly newer Turbo GT4....

The GT4 is cheaper for me to insure despite being newer and having more power!! wacko.gif

We have plumped for Toyota Insurance which is only £30 more than the NFU for last year and £440 less than there quotation for this year.

Someone mentioned a company called Adrian Flux which is not a name I know. Are they good? I used to work with a chap called John Flux 30-odd years ago, a quite eccentric gentleman.

My youngest brother is getting quotes on cars and has found that a Peugeot 106 quicksilver 1.4 petrol is roughly the same to insure as a Peugeot 306 D turbo 1.9 diesel.

Insurance group is the same despite the 20bhp difference and the turbo as diesel cars seem to be classed as non attractive to younger drivers.

He bought the 106 and is now saving hard for insurance while he gets lessons under his belt ready for his test. I'm glad i'm not in his position right now as my first car was a 306 D turbo and I paid £750 fully comp'. He is looking at double that on his 1.4
