1993 4Runner Speedometer not working

1993 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 Automatic

For some reason my speedometer will stop working at random, all other guages are fine. Some times the check engine light will come on when the speedometer comes on, but not every time.

Come on Toyota GURU's help me out here!:(

I have a 1992 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 Automatic and my speedometer failed about a 2 weeks ago. Tomorrow will be my fourth trip to the dealer, where they plan to replace the speed sensor. Since my symptoms don't match their diagnostic procedures, they're just replacing parts until it starts working again.

The failures were intermittent for about 2 months prior to failing completely. At first the check engine light didn't come on but now it does. The dealer said that's because the "communications is lost". Sometimes the O/D Off light flashes. The dealer said that indicates "it's in diagnostic mode". Everything else works fine....the transmission shifts as it should.
