Primary Solenoid Valve?

I bought a 1985 tercel 2 months ago, and this past week already had a breakdown... of sorts. The idle started surging up and down and at the bottom of the surge felt like the car was going to die.. it doesn't. My husband, bless him, has spent about 8 hours trying to figureout what is going on... no manual, Computer? A sensor? it's been a bit of a tough haul. Car is desperately needed for work etc and we're in the sticks. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch!
