About To Buy My First Supra!

Hello all,

I'm just about to buy my first Supra. I'm after a bit of advice on what to look for when out shopping.

I'm going for the non-turbo SZ. I test drove a twin turbo one and wheel spun at 90 mph going from 3rd gear to 4th :o Oh dear! After changing my pants, I decided this option may be a little too much for me in my Supra owning career :D So a 3.0 Supra SZ around 8 years old is what I'm after.

So anyway, anything in particular to watch out for? Or can you recommend anywhere who sells them at an honest price in top condition?

Thanks in advance!

Neon

I agree, i dont see a problem.

You can never have too much power. And once you get used to a N/A supra (which is slower than a group of OAP's doing a Swimming Relay) you will just wish you bought a Twin Turbo!

GO FOR IT MAN! YOU WONT REGRET IT! :hokus-pokus:

bluddy hell.. wheel spinning at 90 ??

I own a MR2 Turbo and I thought that was fast ( used to own a 1.6 16v Megane coupe )...

My next car is going to be a Supra, just waiting until I'm 25 for insurance reasons.. ( 24 just now )....

Also my MR2 drinks petrol like a right bugger the supra will be even worse. I'll be going for a 6 speed Turbo one .... :D

Is that fully comp or third party fire and theft ??

My MR2 GT Turbo Tbar costs me £1500 (fully comp)... and that's with Dorset, a MR2 specialist insurer....

Everywhere else like Direct Line, Tesco etc gave me bluddy silly quotes !

Good grief man! You think I'd insure that car TP even if it was possible? Hell no, FC all the way!

It's coz you're a boy :P How many years driving/ncb etc do you have? I've got 6 years driving 6 years NCB nothing to declare, no points etc etc and 1 accident that wasn't my fault and happened after i took the policy anyway so hasn't affected it...

I just got a great quote from Admiral.

£1500 Full Comp, insured for £11000.

Im only 21, with 2 year No Claims Discount and no accidents/convictions.

Also i have been 100% honest with them, including all my mods including little things like my Head Unit!

Yes im a very happy bunny

On my '93 import Supra TT (only Mod is aftermarket alloys) I pay 790 pounds a year (it was 830 but they knocked off 40 cos I added my parents.

I'm 24, male with 7 years no claims.

It's a fully comp policy, protected no claims with a 500 total excess through elephant.co.uk

I would recommend them, no problems so far, answer phone quickly (national number). They also seem reasonable for mods, 15 quid extra if I did exhaust and induction kit!

Just try a few online companies, you can get an instant quote, it doesn't cost anything and there is no obligation to take the cover......

At least you'll have an idea of what it's gonna cost.......don't be put off by the first quote tho'

I just got a quote for a mate of mine who is your age on a 1991 RX7.....he's got no NCB and the quote came back at nearly 7k.... but I shopped around and got it halved......

Another mate of mine who has just turned 19 has been quoted £1700 fully comp ( obviously ) for a N/A Supra.....which I didn't think was bad........I wouldn't pay it......but then I'm older and wiser B)

At the end of the day your age does play a huge factor......you could be the safest driver in the world.....but to the insurance industry you're a sure fire money earner....

Happy hunting

Dunno, i think i'll put my neck out on the line and say yes.

When i was looking at import supra twin turbos last year i noticed the n/a cars were hardly any cheaper on insurance.

So seeing as the uk cars are quite a bit cheaper they should be about the same as a jap n/a.

Imports go up the equivalent of one insurance group.

The UK GT4 is ins group 17, my Import GT4 is 18. Then again thats also because the Jap one's have more bhp.

Which makes sence because the UK Supra TT's are ins 19 and when getting quotes for a jap TT i was told it was group 20.

the big deciding factor in all insurance quotes is the MK of the car be it a MKII MKIII or MKIV.

this i know for a fact cus my MKII with all its little mods (which means it running at just over 3.0) cost me £246 a year fully comp with full AA breackdown cover. but the MKIII that i looked at last week with no mods was going to cost me nearer £1000 with the same company.

work that one out

qus, that'll be down to the engine and not the mk.

My old mk3 3.0t was costing me £350 in insurance, group 17 i believe. I get a jspec mk3 with the higher powered engine and it costs £800-900, group 20. Admittedly though some of that because its j-spec.
