Your Parents Cars!

All this talk of 8 track cassettes and Ford Granada's got me laughing, so I thought it might be nice to take a trip down memory lane remembering our parents old cars from when we were kids.

Mine are soooooooooooo embarrasing, I can remember the 1st one to have a radio/cassette in it - talk about unbridled luxury!!

Back then, leather and aircon was for Rolls Royces only!!!

From memory the cars were:

Austin 1100

Chrysler 180 (1st car I ever travelled at an indicated 100mph in!!)

Renault 5 (with gearstick in the dash)

Morris Marina 1300 (1st tape player)

Volvo 340 DL (with the one speed autobox and the car I used to nick when they were out so I could teach myself to drive, especially remember taking it to Epping Forest one morning when it had snowed and powersliding it all over the place - it was rear wheel drive!!!) :nono::nono::nono:

There is a thread of bad cars all through my Dad's life so far - He's got a Nedflander at the moment!! :(

Anyone else care to share!!!

When I can remember the 30 odd cars I have had, I will put them on here (maybe minus a couple of

french ones or Chatman might get revenge :D )

Paul, re the nedflanders, I think i've still got bits in my garage, well roofbars anyway, could not make them

fit the rav. May have to dump !

Dave. ;)

From what I can remember, between both my parents ...

Fiat 127

Rover 2600

Austin/Rover Metro/100 (Mum had 3 or 4 of these in a row)

Vauxhall Cavalier

Renault 25

Merc 190E

Merc 200E

There are others, but can't remember atm. They currently share 1 car, not they're retired, and my Dad is only in the country for about 2 months a year. They're on their 3rd Renault Clio, since they stopped making the metro/100.

as much as id love to join the club, ive yet to find a wife to hide my "dirty little secret" from.

plus im a 19 year old motorsport student...

I'm not going to look too cool pulling up to a local cruise in a RAV4 with green neons, wolfrace wheels and a universal jap burnt-tip exhaust poking out the rear am i? I dont want all the corsa and saxo boys laughing at me in thier "sick" cars.

Id get a RAV4 for my mom, but shes one of those "why do people need :censor: 4x4" kinda people.

That makes me feel old.

I've had two of the cars on your list - well almost - an MG 1300GT and a Morris Ital 1.7

Dad had a variety of Fords, switched to Vauxhall, and then back to Ford, the latter including both a Mk1 and a Mk2 Escort, both of which were very cool. I wish we still had those.

He finally saw the light and started buying Toyotas about 20 years ago, so now he has a Rolla and a Carina. And a Mini for some reason.

A 3 doorRAV wi a 3SGTE turbo engine fitted is ***** hot so my garage says. So much so, he won't give me the bleeding thing back til he's done all the rest of the mods! GGGrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

My old man who's 88 and still driving a Fiat punto had an Austin Devon as a first car. From that I think he graduated to a Humber hawk which is why bought an old one (Sad).

After that one resorted to rust dust, he had a Triumph Herald 4 door which got wrote off in an altercation with a gate post.

Since then he's had a variety of cars including the Austin Princess 2200 HLS. Comfy car and crap engine. The best I remember was a 1966 Humber sceptre - 1725cc engine that could outperform most saloons of the time with a bit of tinkering on the carb - better if you went to twin 45 DCOEs - thems was the days!

Latterly he stuck at small cars like the Punto and Clio altho had a Kia Pride for quite some years.

Me? First was a Morris 1000 ex Telecom van. Simple as hell and easy to work on as it worked by rubber bands. Absolutely brilliant going round corners cos you just went up the banking and the suspension took it. When that succumbed to rust got a convertible Triumph Herald which did us proud for a few years. It blew a head gasket when on holiday and I was able to strip down and rebuild the head in just a few hours on an estate in Numeaton - had to cos the car would have got wrecked !! Had a Triumph GT6 which was a scary car - all 6 cyl engine and not much else. At BT drove the old Commer van which you could get onto 2 wheels on corners at 28mph.

Then went through vauxhall Victor Mk2 - crap. Morris Marina estate - nice looking but crap. Then got into company cars with a brand new Talbot Horizon!!

After a few other cars, got given new 2L Sierras which I ran into the ground every 18 months (massive mileage). Then Granada - comfy but slow. After that had a Ford galaxy which needed a petrol tank trailer.

The Toyota Previa was the best vehicle I've driven up to now - cruise comfy at above 100 with good accelaration and cornering stability. Twas automatic and a dream to drive - rear wheel drive. I didn't like the new front wheel drive when it came out.

Now looking forward to the RAV in uprated form; and next project to do up the Humber Hawk. The XJS is still sitting waiting its turn....

Hi

I learnt to drive in an old black ( only colour made ) Ford Popular .Myself and three mates bought it for a £5 when we were 15/16 years old . A local farmer let us use his private mile long dirt track to drive it on taking turns to drive and buy a gallon of petrol in a can every evening . From what I can remember it always overheated and eventually it was crashed into a wall and then our parents found out.

At 17 used my dad's Austin 1100 to pass my test , I think he had a Wolsley before that.

My first car was an Austin Maxi 1750 , great engine but a rust bucket but plenty of room in the back ;) ! Then a Hillman Avenger followed by three Vauxhall Cavaliers a 1600 , a 2000 CD (poor car ECU problems sold after 1 year ) and an SRi (good car lasted 7 years ) .Another Vauxhall and a Vectra 2000 GLS ,another 7 years out of this one .Then the RAV for the last two years .

Regards

Llith

Before I was born, my Dad always had motorbikes. But following my arrival, had to get something to transport me around in - so bought an Austin Allegro in a awful light brown colour. Following that came a Nissan Bluebird, but that was soon sold again due to a dodgy engine (head gaskets kept blowing). Next was a Vauxhall Cavalier, not too bad actually which ended up being parked up the side of the house when the next car came along; a Peugeot 405 GTi. And then another one.

I'm actually quite pleased with my Dad's current choice of car - a MG ZT-T 190... :)

This is great, well done Paul

Before I came along, my Dad had a Frogeye Sprite. I remember him telling me the story of a minor shunt in it and him sitting in the drivers seat watching all the bodywork cracking and crazing around him!

Now the ones that I can remember.

Hillman Imp Californian, green - only just remember that one.

Vauxhall VX4/90, light blue - vinyl seats, lovely on a hot summers day, leave half your skin in the car.

Wolseley Six (Auto), white - couldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding!

Ford Granada Mk1 (Auto), red with black vinyl roof - bought from my Uncle, loved that car!

Peugeot 305 diesel, cream - I wanted my Dad to get the bigger 505. I the end that car must have done a million miles....as a taxi. Remember push starting it every night for a fortnight before my Dad could afford a new alternator...hard work!

And then there were my cars.......but that's another story! :D

Nissan Sunny that had a great leaking sun roof and boy did that rust.....

Vauxhall Astra Sport....Bright Red and alloy wheels and spoilers....My dad went up in my school boy books.....then it got nicked and police found it up a tree....

Ford Escort Ghia, nice plush velour seats and Air Con for the first time....

Currently own now a 5 year old Peugeot 307 Automatic....nice car but I told them to go for a Honda Civic...did they listen :( :(
