  1. Here I am contemplating the upgraded UX (with torture buzzer) and this buzzer thing raises its ugly head. I have a little pre flight ritual of turning the “you will stay in lane even if I drag you into the cones on a completely empty dual carriageway because you didn’t indicate” device, the auto hold on. I also turn my side lights on to save shining my headlights up my neighbours house across the street. I suppose I could learn to speed disable the snowflake speed warning or I could locate the buzzer and stuff it full of blutac although I know the prospect of disabling the woohoo noise generator really upset some members on here. These noise makers are sometimes only a pin hole and take a bit of finding. I wonder if the UKs only traffic cop would get upset if he saw my legs over anchorwoman’s shoulders while she was constantly shifting between 30 and 30.5 mph? You need your head under the dash for such an investigation. Final option is keep the one I’ve got but there doesn’t seem much point living without changing cars at a ridiculous rate.

  2. We've had air con in our cars since 1998 (14 new cars in that period) and needed a service/regas on one car at 4 years old when it seemed the air was not as cold as it should have been. We have the air con on all the time - in winter the dehumidified air helps demist the car. So air con service not needed unless there is something wrong. Fuel treatment not needed. An aerosol can of air con sanitizer/freshener can be bought from Amazon, Halfords, etc, from around £5-12 if desired, and simple to use yourself.

  6. You do get used to disabling it so much that you eventually memorise the pattern. From memory it's 1 press, 3 up, 1 long press, 2 presses, 2 up, 1 press, 2 back The real challenge is trying to do it in time to music. I've mastered Beethoven's 5th but Bohemian Rhapsody is proving to be a real challenge 🤔

  7. Back in the late 80's while working in Oman, Barry Hearn bought his "Snooker Room" Team out for some exhibition matches and some matches against the local talent. Myself and a couple of other of my workers who were snooker mad at that time organised it. Terry Griffiths, Steve Davis, Tony Meo and the rest (can't remember them all!). We all got very smashed at a barbecue courtesy of a local Sheik's mansion in his pool one night! Great bunch of lads then and some awesome snooker was played also!! Bumped into Jennifer Saunders (literally!) one day in a department store in Oxford Street (can't remember which one). SWMBO went weak at the knees when she realised who it was (one of her fangirls!) and became a bit speechless when she chatted small talk with her! Met Queen Elizabeth and the Prince Phillip a long time ago up in Glasgow and finally, I used to work (indirectly) for Richard Branson who used to have a habit of popping by the office unannounced on a frequent basis... Nice guy to chat to (then)... Damn! How could I forget my Rallying years!! Met dear "Uncle Albert", as Roger Clark was known in the community back then, he wasn't competing that year (1979) but gave some great talks in our Motor Club out in Dhekelia, Cyprus. One of our drivers was actually competing (Rothmans Cyprus International 1979) and we rubbed shoulders (and a few drinks after!) with Ari Vatanen & Dave Richards (the winners that year), Heiki Ohu & Toomas Deiner an up and coming Russian pair in a Lada 1600!! (how could I forget getting them going again up in the Troodos hills out of a stage). Kypros Kyprianou & Theo Vassiliades (local guys) did well to come 3rd that year also and they were regulars at our club. Enough reminiscing I hear you cry!!! 🙃

  9. Default will be Summer tyres in UK. I am just about to change all 4 (17") tyres on my car. Waiting until after 20k service as wheel alignment is (listed as) part of that. So my OE Falkens have got to 20k (and are still legal) although I swapped front to rear etc at about 13k. I find my car has been very challenging on the little bit of snow etc down here, and poor too on loose surfaces or wet grass etc. And I do travel North many times each year, So next tyres will be all season - likely CrossClimates.

  12. Maybe i'm too old school, and nothing against online records, but I still like to keep a stamped up service book and paper records of service in my file, as it kind of better shows I care. And as someone else said, if I sell privately, it looks better to the new owner. Electronic records only are all well and good, but they are faceless, and don't show any personal attention to detail in looking after the vehicle.

  15. Had this upselling at the first year service & again at the second year service. Before its third year service Ill get my mechanic mate to check / clean & top up the system as they have the necessary kit plus training for doing hybrids & EV air conditioning systems - then ill see if the dealer try's to upsell again. My air con is on all the time - learnt that years ago from the now retired A/C specialists in the town ( they used to get the vehicles with A/C & cooling problems the main dealers couldn't fix )

  18. Air-con shouldn't need servicing after only two years. The sanitizing the system scam is used by a lot of dealers. The last time I took my car in for a service, I told them not to bother calling me to ask if I wanted it done. You need to use your air-con all the year round, to avoid seals drying out.

  19. That's a bit of a sweeping statement don't you think? I have had two Mk3 Yarises and I am on my 2nd Mk4 (all top of the range with auto climate control). The climate control on all of them was/is excellent as long as it is adjusted correctly. Set and forget to 21°C, a/c on permanently and make sure external air is on. Cools well in the Summer and heats well in the Winter. Never fogs up inside. Can't do better than that.

  20. +1 to both above posts. I did have a set of all season tyres on steel winter wheels a few years ago. And they never saw a flake of snow! Living in t' South, and considering how little snow we actually get, and how much rain, I now stick with 'standard' summer tyres with an A rating for wet use and good reviews for same. I like tyrereviews.com, especially for their video reviews, although, in reality, there doesn't seem to be a significant difference between the premium tyres (and even some mid-range). I also rate the Goodyear EGP 2 tyres. Of course, everyone has their own needs. I am retired so, generally, I am not doing early starts in winter and, if there is snow around for a few days each year, I may not have to drive on it at all. My Corolla has arrived with Conti Ecocontact 6 tyres. They are obviously quality tyres, and A rated for both economy and wet grip, but too early to tell how they are in difficult conditions. The only thing that is immediately obvious is that they are noisy on some road surfaces. Eco biased tyres often are, as the compound tends to be at the harder end of the scale, but I suspect that the root cause may be the car! I noticed how light the bonnet is straight away, because there is no noise insulation at all! If that is carried on elsewhere then it explains the tyre roar (and why no-one can hear when the ICE starts and stops 😁). My Audi A4 was an oasis of serenity by comparison. It is probably the only thing that I miss.

  21. How did you know what key to get? I've got a key which will unlock and start the car, but won't do remote central locking (my other key does do remote, but I want to use the spare rather than the master key). Did you have to buy a new key, or can you reprogram a used key and fit a new blade to it?

  25. Best to just ask the dealer if the car has had the DCM module software updated. Also: There was also a recall for a software update to the heating system for ‘cold’ working, it would effectively make a grinding noise. It is still apparent it’s working when it’s cold but a lot better. There was also a DC-DC converter recall, the whole module was replaced. All of these have been covered extensively at one time or another in this forum. Otherwise, take your own advice, sit back, drive and enjoy. I found coming from other makers, as @Nick72 has indicated it took a little time to dive through the various set ups not only within the car menus but also by setting up a Toyota account and going into that account registering the car and then making additional car setups. The online account is where you can order map updates etc. (also covered in the forum) Download, if you haven’t already, the My Toyota app and go through the process of adding the car and registering the Navigation (head unit), can be a tricky process. I and others have changed some of the various light bulbs to LED’s some make a massive difference, reversing lights, boot light, puddle lights and may be of interest.

  26. Hi all, as we have been discussing battery problems in other posts on Thursday evening my car refused to start. It did unlocked itself though with keyless but then after no brake booster sound and obviously no start, the interior lights were dimmed. I have tried to recharge with smart charger in auto mode with 0.8amp supply and after 30-40 min battery shows full 13.0v , disconnected the charger and voltage dropped to low 11.2v, and 10v after a while, definitely a new battery was needed. I booked for collection from nearest GSF car parts a Yuassa S46B24R for £174 with 10% discount but next day they didn’t have it in stock so I rung Toyota local dealer and they had one for only £136, it looks the same battery with Toyota labels. With the use of smart charger I jump started the old lady and collected the new battery, all fitted in easily, similarly to the hybrid battery replacement very enjoyable experience. Anyone looking for a new battery either big or the small one , just buy from Toyota dealer. 👍 The original battery does look indeed the one supplied with the car back in 2010. , AGM - good technology 👌⚡️

  28. Hello all, I understand the Yaris (mine is an Excel) comes with Predictive Efficient Drive, which according to Toyota: Learns driving patterns to increase deceleration and regenerative braking in places where one usually decelerates (the green leaves which appear in the sat nav) Has Predictive state-of-charge control (SOC), which when the sat nav is on can read the road ahead (uphill vs downhill, traffic,...) and optimize batter charging and discharging to maximize EV operation and minimize fuel consumption My question is: has anyone ever experimented with the Predictive state-of-charge control to understand if fuel consumption is effectively lower, and by how much? If that is the case, then I would start using the in-built sat nav more often (even if I don't really need directions; I can always mute it). Thank you all!

  30. When I was at secondary school, had a Saturday job at Tesco on provisions. Peter Glaze (Crackerjack) was doing panto in Brum, and he shopped in the same store. Served him bacon several times. Back in the 90's I entered a competition on Top Gear Mag. Won a place for my partner in a Top Gear Ladies Day at Silverstone. Met Jason Plato. Amongst other activities, my partner got taken around the circuit a couple of times by him - driving a Nissan 300ZX: Also met Clarkson, who spent the day driving around in a second 300ZX ...

  31. The thing is that to work it needs the elevations along the route ahead. I suspect most satnavs don't have that information in their databases - it would be a lot more data with no value for normal 2D navigation.

  34. I can’t answer for sure but it does reset something because after reconnect the battery the car doesn’t start with press on brake pedal and push start button but requires twice to do so and then starts . Every time the car goes into ON mode ( all lights are ON on dashboard the throttle body valve and egr vale are moving, I can hear them their actuators are working so it is likely similarly to non hybrid cars the engine gets reset its values and settings to default ones.

  37. Our next door neighbour's main house is in Wakefield and told me that most of the taxis there are Toyotas. Urban driving is where the eCVT really provides high mpg: on a run today of 40 miles on a mix of dual and single unrestricted and urban travel I achieved 59mpg with 56% on e power. After a break for shopping and a 2 mile journey home the mpg was 79! Twenty years ago, many taxis were Skoda Octavia 1.9 diesels (which is why we obtained our first Skoda). At present in town, the taxis are a mix of Skodas, Fords and a Dacia. I'd be interested in Alan's comments: an economical self-charging hybrid is preferable to a pure electric car if 200 miles a day is typical plus the possibility of longer journeys when the car can be refilled in a few minutes, rather than waiting to charge the vehicle with an impatient passenger in the back seat.

  44. That's very unfortunate with 2024 models. I have 2023, set it to visual only and it stays that way. Probably wouldn't want to upgrade to 2024 version in the future. Get myself an excel with tech park or the launch edition.

  45. Looking at the other threads, every time you start your car you have to turn those settings off. It's part of the safety system, not saving your preferences. Annoying you and teaching you how to drive, is part of the "new safety systems".
