Hello All

Just had first 10k service done on my Gen 3 Prius

Oil is listed as Shell Semi Synthetic £4.20 per litre (total cost £41.29+vat)

Am I right in thinking this is the wrong oil they have used ?

Hi the engine just takes over 4 liters which equals 5 liters times £4.20 which is £21.00 +Vat it should have been 0w20 oil not a 5w30

Well, i've been charged £41.29+vat, so 10 litres.

Im not sure if ive got the correct 0W20 or 5W30 Oil, hence the question about Semi Synthetic ?

Query it, you have been charged for too much oil I suspect!

Is it £4.20 per litre or per half litre? I think for servicing, they sometimes price oil in half litres?

It MUST be 0w20 for a gen3 (see many previous threads on this).

You will know if they've put 5w30 in it by the sluggish and slightly hesitant driving of the car. The 0w20 is EXPENSIVE and quite rare, though I am not sure if it is fully synthetic or semi.

It's the wrong oil. Shell oils are very good indeed, but the oil must be the correct grade. As far as I know, Shell Helix oils for road use don't include a 0w-20. And as far as I know, 0w-20 can only be achieved with a fully synthetic oil.

You should go back to the dealer, and ask them, very politely, to drain the oil and replace it with the correct grade. Don't accept no for an answer.

Good luck.

Have a look through this thread...

In particular post #29 onwards.

Also the official word from Toyota is here (although not easily found)...

And remember, if they mess up and try and fob you off with anything other than 0w20, Toyota will send you a questionnaire after your service and you can use that as your opportunity to pass on your concerns.

Phoned up, asked what oil was used - few seconds later 0W20 came the reply

I questioned that the invoice listed 'Shell semi synthetic' & they said its their computer system that automatically prints that.

My car seems to be running ok...not alot else i can do i guess

If it runs as before and not quieter or smoother or more hesitant or slower in 'power mode' then it sounds like they've used 0w20.

It is quite obvious (though also subtle) when they've used 5w30.
