Hey Oldcodger...

Just to let you n the guys know...had my rolla booked in for her MOT on saturday morning...was a nervous 40 min wait and it didnt help that they raised her up n down on the ramp say like 10 times...but she PASSED it...sailed it straight through...guy recons everythings absolutely fine...so fingers crossed another year of problem free motoring so as to speak! :yahoo:

Also i came across another cheapish amp on fleabay...which i missed out on...but what do you think of this one??? JVC amplifier

Hi Sam,

Good news on the MOT, just about to start checking mine over as its mot is due the end of next month.

Have you not got your new amp yet or connected up ?

Assume you have got your new jvc 4 door Speakers connected, hope they sound a lot better than the stocks ?

Ya my MOT expires 20/08 but i have always had a habit of mot'ing it a month before just incase...you know...lol

Nope i havent bought an amp as yet...yes i've done my door Speakers and i recon they sound AMMMMMMMMMMMMazing eventhough everyone keeps telling me they're just cheap coaxials...but they do a good job compared to stock! :D

Now all i have to do is my oil n filter change...and place my pipercross filter in place and im done! I would like to take my wheels off and paint my callipers n hubs in gold...but im too lazy for that so maybe next year! Oh & how can i forget,,,i need to put my new dvd headunit in...thats a 15 min job for me! The only prob i'll have is it has a lead thats supposed to connect to the handbrake so that you can only watch dvds when parked up...but i need to find some where to just earth it to...preferably somewhere behind the stereo...thats what i normally do....hmmmmm

Hi Sam,

Yes I generally book mine in a few weeks before, however with the computer system they use, expect if it fails then it get recorded as such, even though your certificate says its good for a few more weeks. Expect if you were pulled the computer record would be final ! - same if you tried to get a new tax disc.

Don't know about the 'front' dvd wiring. think the police have dim views on them like the phones - expect the other guys will tell you how to wire it.

Glad your speakes sound great -are you going to bother with the extra amp and 6x9s ?

You did not get that other jvc amps then ??

As for the one you have just shown,, well think Harwood was making the point about which units are well made - seems he knows JL Audio are, though its a toughie for most to know which are well build - output specs can be so deceiving , I saw inside a "600w" sub amp recently - seen better in a baby alarm !!

Hello Sam,

I'm not no expert in fitting sound systems but back in my teen years I had many highly rated sound systems, I know you say you have a JVC head unit, I'd not use that. I had installed in my brothers yaris ts a Pioneer head unit 50w x4 one of the top end ones (I prefer these over alpine) I had infinity 6x9s thrown into the back shelf, and JBL front components. A Pioneer subwoofer and amp with !Removed! loads of power just cant remember the name.

The Speakers are run by the head max volume is 60, but at 37 the whole street can hear it loud and clear.

If you are in the northwest come to the meet Mr Norfolk is putting together and I can tune it in for you... lol.

I will keep an eye out what do you need?

remember its not about the watts, its how you run it and set your equalizer :)

x2

But please remember, where you can, don't turn up frequencies you want, turn down the ones you don't.

Sorry to interrupt or anything but as I saw a lot of help here, I rather ask here then post a new thread.

I have a few questions:

Would you prefer:

Clarion speakers or 2nd Clarion

Boss Speakers

Vibe Speakers

Basically the difference in these are the frequency range, Sensitivty - dB and RMS rating.

The Boss have a high RMS(225w) and Sensitivity rate(94) but low frequency although 3-way 65hz-20khz.

The Clarion have high frequency(28~32,000hz) but 91dB instead of 94dB and lower RMS (40w?) and 2-way

The Vibe are in the middle with a frequency of 54Hz-25Khz, 91dB sensitivity and 80W RMS and 3-way.

Which of these have the best sound quality and are able to go very loud?

I am planning to buy this amplifier with one of the above speakers:

Boss 800W amplifier

I also already have the following Speakers which a bought about 4 months ago when I had my other car and are absolutely fantastic (used them on just the radio and they were very powerful and crisp)

Pioneer 10" 25cm speakers

Are Boss good as quality amps? and what gauge wire should I use with it? 0/4/8/10 gauge?

P.S. about the damping mats, will they reduce ratling of the window and how are they applied? ie. under the speaker or just the surrounding of the speaker? Which one would be best suited?

Damping Mats

Thanks a lot!

Damping Mats

Hey,

Its often recommended to use the Dynamat Speaker kit, which uses a layer on the area where the speaker is placed and a small amount on the outer door skin just behind the speaker.

However at £10 a speaker you might want to consider CADs Silent Coat Bulk 2mm pads at £80, they will do the whole car.

Will it stop the window rattling ?? - might be more a case of the seals/ guides worn ??

Mate id go with the vibe Speakers, I dont know much about clarion Speakers and I wouldnt touch the boss Speakers, what head unit are you running? Theyr probably 65% of your worries, id recommend a high end pioneer head unit and a good kicker subwoofer minimum of 500w rms... Need any more help pm me, I used to tune sound settings for my mates when they had a car audio shop.

As you have said, the frequency range is important, however '65hz-20khz' means nothing.

yes it tells you they work from 65hz-20khz, but it doesn't say what the response is like at 200hz or 1khz. for example a dog has a frequency response of 65hz-20khz but that means nothing lol.

As for the RMS of the boss Speakers being 225w, they are dreaming. the RMS of a speaker is around 33% of the peak power not 50% as the boss speaker state.

The amp you have linked up, just over £100 for a 4 channel 800w amp? there is a reason it is so cheap, the components used to make it will be of a poor quality, meaning that the amp will never get anywhere near the stated power output.

instead of buying crap Speakers and a crap amp, buy a decent set of Speakers, i'd suggest some Boston or JL Audio speakers. I have Boston S60 components in my rolla and they sound fantastic off of my pioneer head unit.

as 'the gent' has said i also don't mind answering questions, i have just completed my degree in music technology and production by doing an investigation into advanced car audio and also help out at a specialist car audio center, so i'm a bit of an audio specialist.

I have written an audio guide over on the celica club uk forum which has been made a permanent document, which i could upload onto here if people were interested?

Yes, good idea, would be interested to see it - did not find it in the Celica forum after a quick look / search.

I have used clarion Speakers many-a-time.

got some in the 'rolla atm until I swap them for my hifonics.

They're actually not a bad speaker at all.

from what I understand Boss are terrible. lol

I'm all for buying high quality parts (and I've just spent a fortune on my new boot build) but if your budget won't stretch then there are some bargains to be had.

I'm not from England, I'm from Malta xP.

So do you think those are cheap Speakers? I always had in mind that they were a good brand speakers/amplifier =/

Which do you recommend? I don't want something bombastic so about 120-150W RMS per channel is good for me.

I am planning to buy this stereo:

JVC KD-R621

It has 3 amp-outs:

FRONT

REAR

SUB

I already have 4 Speakers in the car 2 front factory, 2 rear factory Speakers and just built a new shelf for 2 x 10" Pioneer rear speakers.

Now I was planning to use the amplifier to power the front+rear in parrallel door speakers in parralel using the front channel, and the rear channel for the 2x10" speakers. To add a subwoofer I think I'm going to buy it pre-amped.

Would you recommend me some speakers. First preference is now the Vibe speakers =]

I wouldn't bother with putting those on the parcel shelf and getting the sub.

I'd just get a sub, some decent front components and that'll improve your audio 10 fold.

then you could look at getting some decent rear door Speakers.

I've done the whole parcel shelf speaker thing and I wouldn't recommend it....

Hmm I see, prob is they're already fitted.

What do you think about the stereo I suggested?

And btw, the S60 are component Speakers which consist of a woofer + tweeter separately. Where did you put your tweeter? Are the defroster vents at the side a good way to use a tweeter in them?

Where did you put your tweeter?

Hey,

In the wing mirror interior covers, you will probably find the tweeter wires there already running down to the main door speaker wires.

ah so you actually drilled the cover and put the tweeter in? also what about the crossover, did you put it in the driver door or just under the tweeter where there is several space?

Thanks!

Dear Oldcodger matey...

Just finished my headunit install...finally...managed to work out where to place that green lead i mentioned that affects the dvd picture...if you connect it to your handbrake sensor wire you can only watch dvds when parked up...so i grounded/earthed it to a bolt holding what i think was my ecu behind the centre fascia and now i can watch dvds whilst on the move lol!..not that i would do that! Other than that it was straight forward install. Opinions on the Avx40...hmmm...its okay...sound is good...picture quality not so...bluetooth feature excellent...as i purchased it used it looks fairly used which doesnt really go with my tidy interior...but hey!

Oh yes whilst i was at it...i opened up my centre fascia unit so that i could clean behind the clock screen and temp screen...it was a bit foggy...but cleaned up nice...just a word of warning to all...be careful when you clean the behinds of those screens as they scratch fairly easy even with a microfibre cloth! Also its nerve wrecking taking it all apart so be extremely careful...a used unit off eBay sell for like £80.00+

Well next stop will be my oil sevice and im done for a while...& oh yes another job...keep forgetting...place my Pipercross panel filter in place...i wonder why i keep delaying that job...hmmmm...i know...i must put up pics hey! Takecare all.

Hey,

Yes, managed to find in the tool box a large enough bit to do the hole in one go; the tweeter held in place with a hot glue gun.

Alternatively you can buy a pair of tweeter ready covers from Toyota for about £20 which have a full grill, though no idea if the mountings will accept your tweeter.

Doubt you would get a cross over in there, plenty of space in the door around the bass unit.

Hi Sam,

Assume you have just got the sound hooked up to your four new door Speakers, any progress on the amp / 6x9a ?

As for the dvd quality - well glad I'm old school, prefer to watch stuff like that on the big tv in comfort.

Interesting what you say about the instrument screen, that was something I noticed on mine when I got it, with the sun on it, its looks really scratched /hazey, but assume someones cleaned it in a normal manner not realising its so delicate.

Wonder if it would hand polish out ? or can it be removed and replaced easy enough or is it bonded to the dash ?

Don't forget to check your pollen filter, did mine the other day, not 6" deep in muck like when I got the car, but its ready for a new one.

Also using one of those air-con cleaner sprays again this year, helps stop the smells / germs building up.

Cool, I'll try checking e-bay as well. If it wasn't for the loan I have on the car I have already made lots of mods in it =[

P.S.

I'm into buying the following amplifier together with wiring kit and also a stereo:

Wiring Kit:

Vibe Wiring Kit

Stereo:

Kenwood KDC-5047U

or

JVC KD-R621

Amplifiers:

JVC Amplifier

or

Boss Amplifier

or

FLI Amplifier v2

or

FLI Amplifier

or

Soundstorm Amplifier

or

Soundstorm Amplifier 2

If you can give me an opinion on any other type of amplifier/wiring kit I would be grateful because I've heard a lot of good things/complaints about lots of amps =]

Thanks!
