Charliefarlies Guide To The Toyota 2Ad Diesel Engine And Its Issues.

Has anyone heard of a car outside UK being given a replacement engine? My Rav4 blew a head gasket last year. My local T service some months earlier didn't pick up the problem, but, knowing something was wrong, I took it to a diesel specialist who identified the problem and fixed it - very expensively! I complained to Mr T and got the brush off. A spokesperson at the time messaged that the engine was the model affected and that I may have got some assistance from T except that I went to a mechanic other than one of theirs.

The car, by the way, is a Euro-spec model imported directly from Japan as new.

I'd love to hear if any other owners outside UK have had any similar problems.

I don't know about rest of the world, but I can confirm extended warranty IS valid in Slovenia (7 years, 200kkm). Also I believe someone mentioned having the engine replaced in Sweden.

I have been considering buying a Rav 4 recently, maybe around 2007..ish, and, thought I'd do a bit of research about them to check whether they are as reliable as Toyota's "apparent" reputation would suggest.

Well after taking in 40 pages of this thread, I have come to the conclusion that I'll not be going near a Rav 4, or any other toyota with D-4D engine.

Any opinions on my choice are welcome, but I don't think I'll be changing my mind on it.

What a shame. I quite fancied one.

It's more than a bit worrying really and wrecks Toyota's reputation in one fell swoop for me. I'll leave well alone I think.

At least Toyota acknowledged the problems and put into place the goodwill warranty covering the first seven years of the vehicle's life. Other manufacturers would not have gone this far.

Totally agree! But you have to feel sorry for the guys who outside the warranty.

True - and I do have sympathy for those who experience problems outside the goodwill period.

Hi

I'm looking for a T180 and am a bit worried now after coming across this post. Is there anyway I can find out if the engine has been changed? We saw one at a toyota dealership and the salesman swore that these are "bulletproof" and I will have a 3 months warranty on the car. I really want a T180 as it ticks all the boxes in terms of boot space for a wheelchair and other things for my disabled partner. We do a lot of motorway driving too.

would a Hpi check show a new engine has been fitted? The second choice is an XT5, ate these affected too or is it just the T180's

I would really appreciate any advice and would be grateful for any advice

Thanks in advance

From what I have read and understand of it, it's all the cars with D4-D engines. Shame really as I wanted one.

There do seem to be a lot of them around, and I am sure that not all will suffer from the issues raised within this thread. However, if it's something Toyota are aware of, and, have gone to the length of offering a clear goodwill resolution should any particular vehicle meet the criteria set by Toyota, then there is obviously an issue with these cars.

It's a bit of a gamble really I guess. In a Russian roulette kind of way.

It would be interesting to find out what modifications Toyota have been made to the warranty replacement engines to avoid the dreaded head gasket problem? and do these replacement engines have a different engine code?

The engines were modified internally, it is the same engine code

Ok thanks guys parts king is it possible to have a check done to see if there has been a change. I had my Rav now for quite a long time but just want to change but only to a Rav petrol is not an option though as I want diesel because of the mileage

Thanks again

Any idea what the internal mods are?

I done know about any mods. We were hoping to see a car in Somerset on the weekend I don't want to travel all the way there and to later find it has issues. I was hoping that there was a way of finding out if ithe engines been replaced. If it has them I'm happy to go ahead and buy any car that has had the engine replaced.

Think if you have the reg no, a Toyota dealer should be able to say whether the engine has been changed under the goodwill arrangement.

Correct :) I think the modifications were mainly to the EGR and suction control valve along with modified ECU to prevent the soot buildup. Cars registered after Sept 2009 have the modifications so maybe stretch UK a newer SR180? Engine is top notch although requires a light right foot to get the economy.

Tried that they weren't very helpful unfortunately in fact denied that there was ever an issue. Saying that, it was the person who was showing us the car. I Was assuming that if an engine is changed then the number would have to be changed on DVLAS database but that doesn't show up on HPI check. I've really got my heart set on a T180 but my budget doesn't stretch to the later version unfortunately

I am pretty light footed unfortunately the SR after 09/2009 are over my budget unless it's a high mileage which I don't really want. I'm too scared of auctions and probably wouldn't have the guts to even bid. I might put something in the wanted section and maybe a member may have one they are selling.

Thanks for the replies guys really appreciated

To be fair, it's unlikely to strike suddenly and its sorted within 3 days by toyota. If you look at that thred frosty posted, it has the issue number. You could quote that at toyota, or try a different branch. If you buy the car, run a few tank fulls of bp ultimate through it and run it on good quality fuel, that will reduce the chance of the problem occurring as these fuels clean the engine.

Ok that sounds fair. When we go to view the car is there anything that I could looked at visibly that may give us any sort of clue as to it may have a problem. We saw one on Monday the car was absolutely stunning at an independent garage. I don't know much about cars but I took someone who does and where the Coolant goes it was empty and like a rusty colour in the tank he also checked the radiator and that was same. We didn't buy it in case it did have any issues. I don't really want to spend so much money and end up with a dodgy engine.

The one we're seeing on the weekend is registered in December 2008 and has some Toyota history and the rest independent.

I will ring them up again and see if I can get the registration and give the Toyota customer services a call to see if they can let us know if it's been changed.

In the mean time thank you again for your reply

Look for white spotting around the coolant expansion tank. Also, the correct Toyota coolant for these should be a pink colour.

When you are looking at cars ask to see the maintenance documentation (service book, invoices/ receipts etc.). A Toyota dealer should also be able to call up the maintenance history if it's on Toyota's system - not all dealers seem to enter onto this though (Arnold Clark don't seem to, at least around Glasgow).

Any Toyota dealer can check service history for you, AS LONG as the history was carried out in the Toyota network, we cannot see Fred in the shed services
